商鞅三說秦孝公,前二說不聽,後一說用者,前二、帝王之論,後一、霸者之議也。夫持帝王之論,說霸者之主,雖精見距;更調霸說,雖麤見受。何則?精遇孝公所不得,麤遇孝公所欲行也。故說者不在善,在所說者善之;才不待賢,在所事者賢之。馬圄之說無方,而野人說之;子貢之說有義,野人不聽。吹籟工為善聲,因越王不善,更為野聲,越王大說。故為善於不欲得善之主,雖善不見;為不善於欲得不善之主,雖不善不見憎。此以曲伎合,合則遇;不合則不遇。

6 逢遇:
或無伎,妄以姦巧合上志,亦有以遇者,竊簪之臣,鷄鳴之客是。竊簪之臣,親於子反,鷄鳴之客,幸於孟嘗,子反好偷臣,孟嘗偽客也。以有補於人君,人君賴之,其遇固宜。或無補益,為上所好,籍孺、鄧通是也。籍孺幸於孝惠,鄧通於孝文,無細簡之才,微薄之能,偶以形佳骨嫺,皮媚色稱。夫好容,人所好也,其遇固宜。或以醜面惡色,稱媚於上,嫫母、無鹽是也。嫫母進於黃帝,無鹽納於齊王。故賢不肖可豫知,遇難先圖。何則?人主好惡無常,人臣所進無豫,偶合為是,適可為上。進者未必賢,退者未必愚;合幸得進,不幸失之。

幸偶

故孔子曰:「君子有不幸而無有幸,小人有幸而無不幸。」又曰:「君子處易以俟命,小人行險以徼幸。」佞幸之徒,閎、藉孺之輩,無德薄才,以色稱媚,不宜而受寵,不當親而得附,非道理之宜,故太史公為之作傳。邪人反道而受恩寵,與此同科,故合其名謂之《佞幸》。無德受恩,無過遇禍,同一實也。

6 幸偶:
韓昭侯醉臥而寒,典冠加之以衣,覺而問之,知典冠己也,以越職之故,加之以罪。衛之驂乘者,見御者之過,從後呼車,有救危之義,不被其罪。夫驂乘之呼車,典冠之加衣,同一意也。加衣恐主之寒,呼車恐君之危,仁惠之情,俱發於心。然而於韓有罪,於衛為忠,驂乘偶,典冠不偶也。

7 幸偶:
非唯人行,物亦有之。長數仞之竹,大連抱之木,工技之人,裁而用之,或成器而見舉持,或遺材而遭廢棄。非工伎之人有憎也,刀斧如有偶然也。蒸穀為飯,釀飯為酒,酒之成也,甘苦異味;飯之熟也,剛柔殊和。非庖廚酒人有意異也,手指之調有偶適也。調飯也殊筐而居,甘酒也異器而處,蟲墯一器,酒棄不飲;鼠涉一筐,飯捐不食。夫百草之類,皆有補益,遭醫人采掇,成為良藥;或遺枯澤,為火所爍。等之金也,或為劍戟,或為鋒銛。同之木也,或梁於宮,或柱於橋。俱之火也,或爍脂燭,或燔枯草。均之土也,或基殿堂,或塗軒戶。皆之水也,或溉鼎釜,或澡腐臭。物善惡同,遭為人用,其不幸偶,猶可傷痛,況含精氣之徒乎?虞舜、聖人也,在世宜蒙全安之福,父頑母嚚,弟象敖狂,無過見憎,不惡而得罪,不幸甚矣!孔子、舜之次也,生無尺土,周流應聘,削迹絕糧。俱以聖才,並不幸偶。舜尚遭堯受禪,孔子已死於闕里。以聖人之才,猶不幸偶,庸人之中,被不幸偶,禍必眾多矣!

然子夏之喪明,喪其子也。子者、人情所通,親者、人所力報也。喪親,民無聞;喪子,失其明,此恩損於親,而增於子也。增則哭泣無數,數哭中風,目失明矣。曾子因俗之議,以著子夏三罪。子夏亦緣俗議,因以失明,故拜受其過。曾子、子夏未離於俗,故孔子門敘行,未在上第也。

世或以老子之道為可以度世,恬淡無欲,養精氣。夫人以精神為壽命,精神不傷,則壽命長而不死。成事:老子行之,踰百度世,為真人矣。
Daoxu:
There is a belief that by the doctrine of Laozi one can transcend into another existence. Through quietism and dispassionateness one nourishes the vital force, and cherishes the spirit. The length of life is based on the animal spirits. As long as they are unimpaired, life goes on, and there is no death. Laozi acted upon this principle. Having done so for over a hundred years, he passed into another existence, and became a true Daoist sage.
