| Is he not a man of complete virtue, who feels no discomposure though men may take no note of him? |
| 《·》: | 王曰：「叟不遠千里而來，亦將有以利吾國乎？」 |
| The king said, 'Venerable sir, since you have not counted it far to come here, a distance of a thousand li, may I presume that you are provided with counsels to profit my kingdom?' |
| 《·》: | 鯤之大，不知其幾千里也。 |
| I do not know how many li in size. |
| 《·》: | 堯曰：「共工善言，其用僻，似恭漫天，不可。」 |
| Yao said, 'The minister of works is talkative; if he is employed, his depravities, although he is apparently respectful, would overspread the heavens, he will not do.' |
| 《·》: | 敖不可長，欲不可從，志不可滿，樂不可極。 |
| Pride should not be allowed to grow; the desires should not be indulged; the will should not be gratified to the full; pleasure should not be carried to excess. |

| And where there are those who have knowledge, to keep them from presuming to act (on it). |
| 《·》: | 南有喬木、不可休息。 |
| In the south rise the trees without branches, Affording no shelter. |

| Sunzi said: The art of war is of vital importance to the State. It is a matter of life and death, a road either to safety or to ruin. Hence it is a subject of inquiry which can on no account be neglected. |

| Therefore when a case of unrighteous conduct is concerned, a son must by no means keep from remonstrating with his father, nor a minister from remonstrating with his ruler. |

| The first said, 'It was the lesson of our great ancestor: The people should be cherished, And not looked down upon. The people are the root of a country; The root firm, the country is tranquil.' |

| 'The dragon exceeds the proper limits; - there will be occasion for repentance:' - a state of fulness, that is, should not be indulged in long. |
