輻,共一轂,當其無,有車之用。轂所以能統三輻者,無也,以其無能受物之故,故能以實統眾也。埏埴以為器,當其無,有器之用。鑿戶牖以為室,當其無,有室之用。故有之以為利,無之以為用。木埴,壁之所以成,三者而皆以無為用也。言無者,有之所以為利,皆賴無以為用也。

出生入死。出生地,入死地。生之徒,有三;死之徒,有三;人之生,動之死地,亦有三。夫何故?以其生生之厚。蓋聞善攝生者,陸行不遇兕虎,入軍不被甲兵;兕無所投其角,虎無所措其爪,兵無所容其刃。夫何故?以其無死地。有三,猶云分有三分,取其生道,全生之極,分有三耳。取死之道,全死之極,亦分有三耳。而民生生之厚,更之無生之地焉,善攝生者無以生為生,故無死地也。器之害者,莫甚乎兵戈,獸之害者,莫甚乎兕虎,而令兵戈無所容其鋒刃,虎兕無所措其爪角,斯誠不以欲累其身者也,何死地之有乎。夫蚖蟺以淵為淺,而鑿穴其中,鷹鸇以山為卑,而增巢其上,矰繳不能及,網罟不能到,可謂處於無死地矣,然而卒以甘餌,乃入於無生之地,豈非生生之厚乎,故物茍不以求離其本,不以欲渝其真,雖入軍而不害,陸行而不可犯也,赤子之可則而貴信矣。
