孟子曰:「舜之居深山之中,與木石居,與鹿豕遊,其所以異於深山之野人者幾希。及其聞一善言,見一善行,若決江河,沛然莫之能禦也。」
Jin Xin I:
Mencius said, 'When Shun was living amid the deep retired mountains, dwelling with the trees and rocks, and wandering among the deer and swine, the difference between him and the rude inhabitants of those remote hills appeared very small. But when he heard a single good word, or saw a single good action, he was like a stream or a river bursting its banks, and flowing out in an irresistible flood.'

《孟子》曰:雞鳴而起,孳孳為善者,舜之徒也。雞鳴而起,孳孳為利者,蹠之徒也。
又曰:堯之于舜,使其子九男事之,二女女焉。百官牛羊倉廩備,以養舜於畎畝之中,而後舉之加諸上位。
又曰:舜生於諸馮,遷於負夏,卒於鳴條,東夷之人也。諸馮、負夏、鳴條皆地名也。負夏在海東方,東夷之地,故曰東夷之人也。
又曰:舜之飯糗茹草也,若將終身焉。及其為天子也,被袗衣,鼓琴二女,果若固有之。袗衣,畫繪者也。此言舜窮居之時,若將終身,及其為萬乘之主,被服繪繡,若固常自所有也。分定使之然也。
又曰:舜之居深山之中也,與木石居,與鹿豕游。其所以異於深山之野人者幾希;舜耕歷山之時,居山之間,鹿豕近人,若與人游。希,遠也。當此之時,舜與野人,相去豈遠哉。及其聞一善言,見一善行,若決江河,沛然莫之能御也。
又曰:舜流共工于幽州,放驩兜于崇山,殺三苗于三危,殛鯀于羽山。四罪而天下咸服。
又曰:大舜有大焉:善與人同,舍己從人,樂取於人以為善;大舜,虞舜也。孔子稱曰巍巍,故曰大舜也有大善焉,能舍已從人。子路與舜同也。自耕稼陶漁以至為帝,無非取於人者。取諸人以為善,是與人為善者也。故君子莫大乎與人為善。
又曰:天下大悅而將歸己,視天下悅而歸己猶草芥也,惟舜為然。舜不以天下歸己為樂,號泣于田也。不得乎親,不可以為人。不順乎親,不可以為子。舜盡事親之道,而瞽瞍底豫。瞽瞍底豫,而天下化。瞽瞍底豫而天下之為父子者定。此之謂大孝。
又曰:堯崩三年之喪畢,舜避堯之子於南河之南。天下諸侯朝覲者,不之堯之子而之舜;訟獄者,不之堯之子而之舜;謳歌者,不謳歌堯之子而謳歌舜。曰:「天也,夫然後之中國,踐天子之位焉。」
