93 月令:
是月也,大飲烝。天子乃祈來年於天宗,大割祠于公社及門閭。臘先祖五祀,勞農以休息之。天子乃命將帥講武,習射御角力。
Yue Ling:
In this month there is the great festivity when they drink together, and each of the stands bears half its animal roasted. The son of Heaven prays for (a blessing on) the coming year to the Honoured ones of heaven; sacrifices with an ox, a ram, and a boar at the public altar to the spirits of the land, and at the gates of towns and villages; offers the sacrifice three days after the winter solstice with the spoils of the chase to all ancestors, and at the five (household) sacrifices; thus cheering the husbandmen and helping them to rest from their toils. The son of Heaven orders his leaders and commanders to give instruction on military operations, and to exercise (the soldiers) in archery and chariot-driving, and in trials of strength.

孟冬之月,賞死事,恤孤寡,死事,謂以國事死也。命百官謹蓋藏,謂府庫囷倉也。固封疆,備邊境,完要塞,謹關梁,大飲烝,十月農功畢,天子諸侯與其羣臣飲酒於大學以正齒位,謂之大飲。天子乃祈來年於天宗,祀於公社,及門閭,臘先祖五祀,此周禮所謂蠟祭也。天宗,謂日月星辰也。五祀,門,户,中霤,竈,行。勞農以休息之,黨正屬民飲酒正齒位是也。天子乃命將帥講武,習射御。

《禮記月令》曰:孟冬,是月也,天子乃祈來年于天宗,大割牲,祠于公社及門閭,臘先祖五祀。此《周禮》所謂蠟祭也。天宗,日月星辰也。大殺群牲,割之也。臘謂以畋獵所得禽祭也。五祀,門戶霤井灶也。或曰祈年,或曰大割,或曰臘,互其文也。勞農休息之。黨正屬民飲酒,正齒位也。天子乃命將帥講武,習射御,角力。講武角力,校武士材力,所以備畋獵之禮。
又曰:郊特牲:天子大蠟八,伊耆氏始為蠟。伊耆氏,古天子號也。蠟也者,索也。謂求索也。歲十二月合聚萬物而索饗之也。歲十二月,周之正月謂建亥之月,饗者祭其神也。萬物育功民者,神使為之也,祭之以報焉。蠟之祭也,主先嗇也。先嗇,若神農者,司嗇,后稷神也。
又曰:昔者仲尼與于蠟賓,蠟者索也。歲十二月索合聚萬物而索饗之。亦祭宗廟,孔子仕魯在助祭之中。事畢出游于觀之上,喟然而嘆。觀,闕也。子見魯君于祭禮有不備于此,又睹象魏舊章之處,感而嘆之。仲尼之嘆,蓋嘆魯也。
又曰:子貢觀于蠟。蠟,索也,歲十二月索,群神而祀之臘也。孔子曰:「賜也樂乎?」對曰:「一國之人皆若狂,賜未知其為樂也。」孔子曰:「百日之勞,一日之澤,非爾所知。」言民皆勤稼穡,百日之勞,喻久也。今一日使之飲酒宴樂,是君之恩澤也。

14 臘:
高堂隆《魏臺訪議》曰:詔問何以用未祖丑臘?臣隆對曰:按《月令》孟冬十月,臘先祖五祀,謂薦田獵所得禽獸謂之臘。《左傳》曰:「虞不臘矣。」惟見此二者,而皆不書日。聞先師說曰:王者各以其行之盛祖,以其終臘。水始生於申,盛於子,終於辰,故水行之君,以子祖辰臘。火始生於寅,盛于午,終於戌,故火行之君,以午祖戌臘。木始生於亥,盛於卯,終於未,故木行之君,以卯祖未臘。金始生於巳,盛于酉,終於丑,故金行之君,以酉祖丑臘。土始生於未,盛於戌,終於辰,故土行之君,以戌祖辰臘。今魏據土德,宜以戌祖辰臘也。
又曰:華歆常以臘日宴子弟,王朗慕之。蓋其家法,由來漸矣。杜公瞻云:蠟者,息民之祭。故孔子云,百日之勞,一日之懌。其所祭八神者,皆報其成功。則於十月農隙是也。后世臘有新故交接之義,遂移於夏正十二月。晉博士張亮說蠟聚饗,臘者祭廟,初云蠟則黃服,蠟臘不同總非也。臘宜在新故交接,二祭月同而名異,祭俱而服殊。今推諸經傳無正說。蠟臘之文,《月令》云蠟臘,此則同日祭,但互名耳。據田獵取獸之名為臘,因索饗百神號之日蠟,其日上祭先祖旁享百神下息萬民,無別祭也。即鄭玄云既蠟臘先祖五祀,於是勞農者也。近日蠟臘兼設,蠟在十月,臘在歲終。隋開皇四年始停建元之蠟,直為建丑之臘,依五行,火衰於戌而用戌日故也。
