| 3 | 說劍: | 莊子入殿門不趨，見王不拜。王曰：「子欲何以教寡人，使太子先？」曰：「臣聞大王喜劍，故以劍見王。」王曰：「子之劍何能禁制？」曰：「臣之劍，十步一人，千里不留行。」王大悅之，曰：「天下無敵矣。」莊子曰：「夫為劍者，示之以虛，開之以利，後之以發，先之以至。願得試之。」王曰：「夫子休就舍，待命令設戲請夫子。」王乃校劍士七日，死傷者六十餘人，得五六人，使奉劍於殿下，乃召莊子。王曰：「今日試使士敦劍。」莊子曰：「望之久矣。」王曰：「夫子所御杖，長短何如？」曰：「臣之所奉皆可。然臣有三劍，唯王所用，請先言而後試。」 |
| Delight in the Sword-fight:...: | When Zhuangzi entered the door of the hall, he did not hurry forward, nor, when he saw the king, did he bow. The king asked him, 'What do you want to teach me, Sir, that you have got the prince to mention you beforehand?' The reply was, 'I have heard that your Majesty is fond of the sword-fight, and therefore I have sought an interview with you on the ground of (my skill in the use of) the sword.' 'What can you do with your sword against an opponent?' 'Let me meet with an opponent every ten paces, my sword would deal with him, so that I should not be stopped in a march of a thousand li.' The king was delighted with him, and said, 'You have not your match in the kingdom.' Zhuangzi replied, 'A good swordsman first makes a feint (against his opponent), then seems to give him an advantage, and finally gives his thrust, reaching him before he can return the blow. I should like to have an opportunity to show you my skill.' The king said, 'Stop (for a little), Master. Go to your lodging, and wait for my orders. I will make arrangements for the play, and then call you.' The king accordingly made trial of his swordsmen for seven days, till more than sixty of them were killed, or (severely) wounded. He then selected five or six men, and made them bring their swords and take their places beneath the hall, after which he called Zhuangzi, and said to him, 'To-day I am going to make (you and) these men show what you can do with your swords.' 'I have long been looking for the opportunity,' replied Zhuangzi. The king then asked him what would be the length of the sword which he would use; and he said, 'Any length will suit me, but I have three swords, any one of which I will use, as may please your Majesty. Let me first tell you of them, and then go to the arena.' |

《莊子·說劍篇》曰：昔趙文王喜劍，劍士俠門而客三千餘人，日夜相擊於前，死傷者歲百餘人，好之不厭，如是三年國衰，諸侯謀之。太子悝患之，募左右曰：「孰能說王之意，止劍士者奉千金。」左右曰：「莊子能。」太子奉千金，莊子弗受，與使者皆往見太子曰：「聞太子欲用周者絕王之喜好也。」太子曰：「然。吾王所見者惟劍士也。」莊子曰：「諾。周善為劍。」太子曰：「吾王所好劍士也。蓬頭突鬢，垂冠縵胡之纓，短后之衣，瞋目而語難，王見說之。今夫子必儒服見王，事必大逆。」莊子請治劍服。三日，太子乃見王。王脫白刃待之。莊子入殿門不趨，見王不拜，王曰：「子欲何以教寡人，使太子先焉？」曰：「臣聞大王喜劍，故以劍見王。」王曰：「子之劍何能禁制。」曰：「臣之劍十步一人，千里不留行。」王大悅，曰：「天下無敵矣。」莊子曰：「夫為劍者，示之以虛，開之以利，后之以發，先之以至，愿得試之。」王曰：「夫子休，就舍待命，設戲請夫子。」王乃校劍士，七日七夜死傷者六十餘人，得五六人，使捧劍於殿下，乃召莊子。王曰：「今日使劍士交劍。」莊子曰：「望之以久矣。」王曰：「夫子御杖長短如何？」莊子曰：「臣之所奉皆可，臣有三劍，惟王所用，請先言而後試。」王曰：「愿聞三劍。」曰：「有天子之劍，有諸侯之劍，有庶人之劍。」王曰：「天子之劍何如？」曰：「天子之劍以燕溪石城為鋒，齊岱為鍔，晉衛為脊，周宋為鐔，韓魏為鋏，苞以四夷，裹以四時，統以渤海，帶以常山，制以五行，論以刑德，開以陰陽，持以春夏，行以秋冬。此劍直之無前，舉之無上，按之無下，運之無旁，上決浮雲，下絕地紀。此劍一用匡諸侯，天下服矣。此天子之劍也。」文王茫然自失，曰：「諸侯之劍何？」曰：「諸侯之劍以智勇士為鋒，以清廉士為鍔，以賢良士為脊，以忠聖士為鐔，以豪杰士為鋏。此劍直之亦無前，舉之亦無上，按之亦無下，運之亦無旁。上法圓天以順三光，下法方地以順四時，中和人意以安四鄉。此劍一用如雷電之震也，四封之內無不賓服而聽從君命者。此諸侯之劍也。」王曰：「庶人之劍如何？」曰：「庶人之劍蓬頭突鬢，垂冠縵胡之纓，短後之衣，瞋目而語難，相擊於前，上斬頸頷，下次肝肺。此無異斗雞，一旦命已絕矣，無所用於國事。今大王有天子之位，而好庶人之劍，臣竊為大王薄之。」王乃牽而上殿，宰人上食，王三環之。莊子曰：「王安坐定氣，劍事畢矣。」於是，文王不出宮三月，劍士皆伏斃其處矣。 又曰：干越之劍，匣而藏之，不敢輕用，寶之至也。 又曰：大冶鑄金，金踴躍曰：「我必為鏌耶。」 |
