凡從外入者,莫深於聲音,變人最極,故聖人因而成之以德曰樂,樂者德之風,《》曰:「威儀抑抑,德音秩秩。」謂禮樂也。故君子以禮正外,以樂正內;內須臾離樂,則邪氣生矣,外須臾離禮,則慢行起矣;故古者天子諸侯聽鐘聲,未嘗離於庭,卿大夫聽琴瑟,未嘗離於前;所以養正心而滅淫氣也。樂之動於內,使人易道而好良;樂之動於外,使人溫恭而文雅;雅頌之聲動人,而正氣應之;和成容好之聲動人,而和氣應之;粗厲猛賁之聲動人,而怒氣應之;鄭衛之聲動人,而淫氣應之。是以君子慎其所以動人也。

子赤殺,弗忍書日,痛其禍也。子般殺而書乙未,殺其恩也。屈伸之志,詳略之文,皆應之。吾以其近近而遠遠,親親而疏疏也,亦知其貴貴而賤賤,重重而輕輕也。有知其厚厚而薄薄,善善而惡惡也,有知其陽陽而陰陰,白白而黑黑也。百物皆有合偶,偶之合之,仇之匹之,善矣。《》云:「成儀抑抑,德音秩秩。無怨無惡,率由仇匹。」此之謂也。《春秋》,義之大者也。視其溫辭,可以知其塞怨。是故於外,道而不顯,於內,諱而不隱。於尊亦然,於賢亦然。此其別內外、差賢不肖而等尊卑也。義不訕上,智不危身。故遠者以義諱,近者以智畏。畏與義兼,則世逾近而言逾謹矣。此定哀之所以微其辭。以故用則天下平,不用則安其身,《春秋》之道也。
