8 顏淵:
棘子成曰:「君子質而已矣,何以文為?」子貢曰:「惜乎!夫子之說,君子也。駟不及舌。文猶質也,質猶文也。虎豹之鞟,猶犬羊之鞟。」
Yan Yuan:
Ji Zi Cheng said, "In a superior man it is only the substantial qualities which are wanted; why should we seek for ornamental accomplishments?" Zi Gong said, "Alas! Your words, sir, show you to be a superior man, but four horses cannot overtake the tongue. Ornament is as substance; substance is as ornament. The hide of a tiger or a leopard stripped of its hair, is like the hide of a dog or a goat stripped of its hair."

荀悅曰。經稱立天之道。曰陰與陽。立地之道。曰柔與剛。立人之道。曰仁與義。陰陽之節。在於四時五行。仁義之大體。在於三綱六紀。上下咸序。五品有章。淫則荒越。民失其性。於是在上者。則天之經。因地之義。立度宣教。以制其中。施之當時。則為道德。垂之後世。則為典經。皆所以總統綱紀。崇立王業。及至末俗。異端並生。諸子造誼。以亂大倫。於是微言絕。群議繆焉。故仲尼畏而憂之。詠歎斯文。是聖人篤文之至也。若乃季路之言何必讀書然後為學。棘子成曰君子質而已矣何以文為。夫潛地窟者而不睹天明。守冬株者而不識夏榮。非通照之術也。然博覽之家。不知其穢。兼而善之。是大田之莠。與苗並興。則良農之所悼也。質樸之士。不擇其美。兼而棄之。是崑山之玉。與石俱捐。則卞和之所痛也。故孔子曰。博學於文。約之以禮。亦可以弗畔矣夫。孝武皇帝時。董仲舒推崇孔氏。抑絀百家。至劉向父子。典校經籍。而新義分方。九流區別。典籍益彰矣。自非至聖之崇。孰能定天下之疑。是以後賢異心。各有損益。中興之後。大司農鄭眾。侍中賈逵。各為春秋左氏傳作解注。孝桓帝時。故南郡太守馬融著易解。頗生異說。及臣悅叔父故司徒爽。著易傳。據爻象。承應陰陽變化之義。以十篇之文。解說經意。由是兗豫之言易者。咸傳荀氏學。而馬氏亦頗行。於是爽又著詩傳。皆附正義。無他說。又去聖久遠。道義難明。而古文尚書毛詩左氏春秋周官。通人學者。多好尚之。然希各得立於學官也。是時。夜郎王興與勾町王及各諸外國。更相攻伐。遣大中大夫張匡。持節以和解之。興不承詔命。刻木為漢使而射之。於是以臨邛陳立為牂柯太守。立喻告興。興不從命。立奏請誅之而未報。立從數千人出行縣。至興國。且同亭召興。興以從邑各數百人詣立。立責數興。因斬興頭。巴君曰。將軍誅無狀。請出曉士眾。皆釋兵降。勾町王等。其王震恐。乃入粟牛羊以勞士眾。立還歸郡。興妻父翁指。與興子務邪。收餘兵迫脅旁邑。立奏募諸蠻夷與都尉長吏攻翁指等。蠻夷共斬其首以降。西夷遂平。會巴蜀郡多盜賊。徙立為巴郡太守秩中二千石。爵左庶長。後徙天水太守。勸耕農。為天下最。賜黃金四十斤。
