管仲有病,桓公問之曰:「仲父之病病矣,可不謂云,至於大病,則寡人惡乎屬國而可?」管仲曰:「公誰欲與?」公曰:「鮑叔牙。」曰:「不可。其為人,絜廉善士也,其於不己若者不比之;又一聞人之過,終身不忘。使之治國,上且鉤乎君,下且逆乎民。其得罪於君也,將弗久矣。」公曰:「然則孰可?」對曰:「勿已,則隰朋可。其為人也,上忘而下畔,愧不若黃帝而哀不己若者。以德分人謂之聖,以財分人謂之賢。以賢臨人,未有得人者也;以賢下人,未有不得人者也。其於國有不聞也,其於家有不見也。勿已,則隰朋可。」
Xu Wu-gui:
Guan Zhong being ill, duke Huan went to ask for him, and said, 'Your illness, father Zhong, is very severe; should you not speak out your mind to me? Should this prove the great illness, to whom will it be best for me to entrust my State?' Guan Zhong said, 'To whom does your grace wish to entrust it?' 'To Bao Shu-ya,' was the reply. 'He will not do. He is an admirable officer, pure and incorruptible, but with others who are not like himself he will not associate. And when he once hears of another man's faults, he never forgets them. If you employ him to administer the state, above, he will take the leading of your Grace, and, below, he will come into collision with the people - in no long time you will be holding him as an offender.' The duke said, 'Who, then, is the man?' The reply was, 'If I must speak, there is Xi Peng - he will do. He is a man who forgets his own high position, and against whom those below him will not revolt. He is ashamed that he is not equal to Huang-Di, and pities those who are not equal to himself. Him who imparts of his virtue to others we call a sage; him who imparts of his wealth to others we call a man of worth. He who by his worth would preside over others, never succeeds in winning them; he who with his worth condescends to others, never but succeeds in winning them. Xi Peng has not been (much) heard of in the state; he has not been (much) distinguished in his own clan. But as I must speak, he is the man for you.'

奚謂過而不聽於忠臣?昔者齊桓公九合諸侯,一匡天下,為五伯長,管仲佐之。管仲老,不能用事,休居於家,桓公從而問之曰:「仲父家居有病,即不幸而不起此病,政安遷之?」管仲曰:「臣老矣,不可問也。雖然,臣聞之,知臣莫若君,知子莫若父,君其試以心決之。」君曰:「鮑叔牙何如?」管仲曰:「不可。鮑叔牙為人,剛愎而上悍。剛則犯民以暴,愎則不得民心,悍則下不為用,其心不懼。非霸者之佐也。」公曰:「然則豎刁何如?」管仲曰:「不可。夫人之情莫不愛其身,公妒而好內,豎刁自獖以為治內,其身不愛,又安能愛君?」公曰:「然則衛公子開方何如?」管仲曰:「不可。齊、衛之間不過十日之行,開方為事君,欲適君之故,十五年不歸見其父母,此非人情也,其父母之不親也,又能親君乎?」公曰:「然則易牙何如?」管仲曰:「不可。夫易牙為君主味,君之所未嘗食唯人肉耳,易牙蒸其子首而進之,君所知也。人之情莫不愛其子,今蒸其子以為膳於君,其子弗愛,又安能愛君乎?」公曰:「然則孰可?」管仲曰:「隰朋可。其為人也,堅中而廉外,少欲而多信。夫堅中則足以為表,廉外則可以大任,少欲則能臨其眾,多信則能親鄰國,此霸者之佐也,君其用之。」君曰:「諾。」居一年餘,管仲死,君遂不用隰朋而與豎刁。刁蒞事三年,桓公南遊堂阜,豎刁率易牙、衛公子開方及大臣為亂,桓公渴餒而死南門之寢、公守之室,身死三月不收,蟲出於戶。故桓公之兵橫行天下,為五伯長,卒見弒於其臣,而滅高名,為天下笑者,何也?不用管仲之過也。故曰:過而不聽於忠臣,獨行其意,則滅其高名為人笑之始也。

管仲寢疾,桓公往問之曰:「仲父之疾甚矣,若不可諱也不幸而不起此疾,彼政我將安移之?」管仲未對。桓公曰:「鮑叔之為人何如?」管子對曰:「鮑叔君子也,千乘之國,不以其道,予之,不受也。雖然,不可以為政,其為人也,好善而惡惡已甚,見一惡終身不忘。」桓公曰:「然則庸可?」管仲對曰:「隰朋可,朋之為人,好上識而下問,臣聞之,以德予人者,謂之仁;以財予人者,謂之良;以善勝人者,未有能服人者也。以善養人者,未有不服人者也。於國有所不知政,於家有所不知事,則必朋乎。且朋之為人也,居其家不忘公門,居公門不忘其家,事君不二其心,亦不忘其身,舉齊國之幣。握路家五十室,其人不知也,大仁也哉,其朋乎!」公又問曰:「不幸而失仲父也,二三大夫者,其猶能以國寧乎?」管仲對曰:「君請矍已乎,鮑叔牙之為人也好直,賓胥無之為人也好善,寧戚之為人也能事,孫在之為人也善言。」公曰:「此四子者,其庸能一人之上也?寡人并而臣之,則其不以國寧,何也。」對曰:「鮑叔之為人也好直,而不能以國詘,賓胥無之為人也好善,而不能以國詘。寧戚之為人也能事,而不能以足息。孫在之為人也善言,而不能以信默臣聞之,消息盈虛,與百姓詘信,然後能以國寧,勿已者,朋其可乎!朋之為人也,動必量力,舉必量技。」言終,喟然而歎曰:「天之生朋,以為夷吾舌也,其身死,舌焉得生哉?」管仲曰:「夫江黃之國近於楚,為臣死乎,君必歸之楚而寄之。君不歸,楚必私之,私之而不救也,則不可,救之,則亂自此始矣。」桓公曰:「諾。」管仲又言曰:「東郭有狗啀啀,旦暮欲齧我,猳而不使也,今夫易牙,子之不能愛,將安能愛君?君必去之。」公曰:「諾。」管子又言曰:「北郭有狗啀啀,旦暮欲齧我,猳而不使也,今夫豎刁,其身之不愛,焉能愛君,君必去之。」公曰:「諾。」管子又言曰:「西郭有狗啀啀,旦暮欲齧我,猳而不使也,今夫衛公子開方,去其千乘之太子,而臣事君,是所願也得於君者,將欲過其千乘也,君必去之。」桓公曰:「諾。」管子遂卒。卒十月,隰朋亦卒。桓公去易牙豎刁衛公子開方。五味不至,於是乎復反易牙。宮中亂,復反豎刁。利言卑辭不在側,復反衛公子開方。桓公內不量力,外不量交,而力伐四鄰。公薨,六子皆求立,易牙與衛公子,內與豎刁,因共殺群吏而立公子無虧,故公死七日不歛,九月不葬,孝公奔宋,宋襄公率諸侯以伐齊,戰於甗,大敗齊師,殺公子無虧,立孝公而還。襄公立十三年,桓公立四十二年。

又曰:魏公叔座疾,惠王往問之。曰:「公叔之病甚矣,將奈社稷何?」對曰:「臣之庶子鞅者,愿王以國聽之。若不能聽,勿使出境。」王不應。出謂左右曰:「豈不悲哉!夫以公叔之賢,今謂寡人必以國聽鞅,悖也。」公叔死,公孫鞅西游秦,秦孝公聽之,秦果強,魏果弱。
又曰:百里奚之未遇時,至虢而虜,飯牛於秦,練以鬻五羖之皮。公孫披得,悅之,獻諸繆公。三日,請屬事焉。公曰:「買之五羊皮而臣之,無乃為天下笑乎?」披曰:「信賢而任之,君之明也;讓賢而下之,臣之忠也。君為明,臣為忠,彼信賢也。境內將服,敬國且畏,夫誰暇笑哉?」用之,謀無不當,舉必有功。
