匡章曰:「陳仲子豈不誠廉士哉?居於陵,三日不食,耳無聞,目無見也。井上有李,螬食實者過半矣,匍匐往將食之,三咽,然後耳有聞,目有見。」
Teng Wen Gong II:
Kuang Zhang said to Mencius, 'Is not Chen Zhong a man of true self-denying purity? He was living in Wu Ling, and for three days was without food, till he could neither hear nor see. Over a well there grew a plum-tree, the fruit of which had been more than half eaten by worms. He crawled to it, and tried to eat some of the fruit, when, after swallowing three mouthfuls, he recovered his sight and hearing.'
孟子曰:「於齊國之士,吾必以仲子為巨擘焉。雖然,仲子惡能廉?充仲子之操,則蚓而後可者也。夫蚓,上食槁壤,下飲黃泉。仲子所居之室,伯夷之所築與?抑亦盜跖之所築與?所食之粟,伯夷之所樹與?抑亦盜跖之所樹與?是未可知也。」
Mencius replied, 'Among the scholars of Qi, I must regard Zhong as the thumb among the fingers. But still, where is the self-denying purity he pretends to? To carry out the principles which he holds, one must become an earthworm, for so only can it be done. Now, an earthworm eats the dry mould above, and drinks the yellow spring below. Was the house in which Zhong dwells built by a Bo Yi? or was it built by a robber like Zhi? Was the millet which he eats planted by a Bo Yi? or was it planted by a robber like Zhi? These are things which cannot be known.'
曰:「是何傷哉?彼身織屨,妻辟纑,以易之也。」
'But,' said Zhang, 'what does that matter? He himself weaves sandals of hemp, and his wife twists and dresses threads of hemp to sell or exchange them.'
曰:「仲子,齊之世家也。兄戴,蓋祿萬鍾。以兄之祿為不義之祿而不食也,以兄之室為不義之室而不居也,辟兄離母,處於於陵。他日歸,則有饋其兄生鵝者,己頻顣曰:『惡用是鶃鶃者為哉?』他日,其母殺是鵝也,與之食之。其兄自外至,曰:『是鶃鶃之肉也。』出而哇之。以母則不食,以妻則食之;以兄之室則弗居,以於陵則居之。是尚為能充其類也乎?若仲子者,蚓而後充其操者也。」
Mencius rejoined, 'Zhong belongs to an ancient and noble family of Qi. His elder brother Dai received from Gai a revenue of 10,000 zhong, but he considered his brother's emolument to be unrighteous, and would not eat of it, and in the same way he considered his brother's house to be unrighteous, and would not dwell in it. Avoiding his brother and leaving his mother, he went and dwelt in Wu Ling. One day afterwards, he returned to their house, when it happened that some one sent his brother a present of a live goose. He, knitting his eyebrows, said, "What are you going to use that cackling thing for?" By-and-by his mother killed the goose, and gave him some of it to eat. Just then his brother came into the house, and said, "It is the flesh of that cackling thing," upon which he went out and vomited it. Thus, what his mother gave him he would not eat, but what his wife gives him he eats. He will not dwell in his brother's house, but he dwells in Wu Ling. How can he in such circumstances complete the style of life which he professes? With such principles as Zhong holds, a man must be an earthworm, and then he can carry them out.'

25 刺孟:
然則仲子有大非,孟子非之,不能得也。夫仲子之去母辟兄,與妻獨處於陵,以兄之宅為不義之宅,以兄之祿為不義之祿,故不處不食,廉潔之至也,然則其徙於陵歸候母也,宜自齎食而行。鵝膳之進也,必與飯俱。母之所為飯者,兄之祿也,母不自有私粟以食仲子,明矣。仲子食兄祿也。伯夷不食周粟,餓死於首陽之下,豈一食周粟而以汙其潔行哉?仲子之操,近不若伯夷,而孟子謂之若蚓乃可,失仲子之操所當比矣。

陳仲子者,齊人也。其兄戴為齊卿,食祿萬鍾,仲子以為不義,將妻子適楚,居於陵,自謂於陵仲子。窮不苟求,不義之食不食。遭歲飢,乏糧三日,乃匍匐而食井上李實之蟲者,三咽而能視身。自織履,妻擘纑,以易衣食。楚王聞其賢,欲以為相,遣使持金百鎰至於陵聘仲子。仲子入謂妻曰:「楚王欲以我為相,今日為相,明日結駟連騎,食方丈於前,意可乎?」妻曰:「夫子左琴右書,樂在其中矣。結駟連騎,所安不過容膝;食方丈於前,所甘不過一肉。今以容膝之安,一肉之味,而懷楚國之憂,亂世多害,恐先生不保命也。」於是出謝使者,遂相與逃去,為人灌園。

皇甫士安《高士傳》曰:荷蕢者,衛人也。避亂不仕,自匿姓名。孔子擊磬于衛,乃荷蕢而過孔氏之門,曰:「有心哉,擊磬乎?」既而曰:「硁硁乎莫已知,期已而已矣。深則厲,淺則揭。」孔子聞之,曰:「果哉,蔑之難矣!」
又曰:石門守者,魯人也。亦避世不仕,自隱。又名為魯守石門,主晨夜開閉之。子路從孔子入石門而宿,問之路曰:「奚自?」子路曰:「自孔氏。」遂譏孔子曰:「是知其不可而為之者與?」時人賢焉。
又曰:東郭順子者,魏人也。脩道守真。田子方師事之,而為魏文侯師友。侍坐於文侯,數稱溪工。文侯曰:「溪工子師耶?」子方曰:「非也,無擇之里人也。稱道數當,無擇稱之。」文侯曰:「然則子無師耶?」子方曰:「有。」文侯曰:「子師誰?」子方曰:「東郭順子也。」文侯曰:「然則夫子何故未嘗稱之?」子方曰:「其為人也,直情而容物。物無道,則正容以悟之,使人意也消。無擇何也以稱之!」子方出,文侯曰:「遠哉,全德之君子!始吾以聖智之言、仁義之行為至矣。吾聞子方之師,形解而不敢動,口鉗而不知言語,所學真士梗耳。夫魏,真為居累矣。」
又曰:壺丘子林者,鄭人也。道德甚優,列御寇師事之。
又曰:列御寇者,鄭人也,隱居不仕。鄭穆公時,子陽為相,專任刑。列御寇乃絕跡窮巷,面有饑色。或告子陽曰:「列御寇蓋有道之士也,居君之國而窮,君無乃不好士乎?」子陽聞而悟,使官載粟數十乘以與之。御寇出見使,再拜而辭之。入見其妻,妻憮心而怒曰:「聞為有道者,妻子皆得樂。今子之妻子有饑色,君遺先生食,先生不受,豈非命也哉?」御寇笑曰:「君非自知而遺我也,以人之言而遺我。至於其罪我也,又必且以人之言。此吾所以不受也。」居一年,鄭人殺子陽,其黨皆死,御寇安然獨全。終身不仕。著書八篇,言道家之意,號曰《列子》。
又曰:段干木者,晉人也。少貧目賤,心志不遂,乃怡清節,游西河,師事卜子夏。與田子方、李克、翟璜、吳起等居於魏,皆為將,惟干木守道不仕。魏文侯就造其門,段干木逾墻而避之。文侯尊以客禮,出過其廬而軾。其仆問曰:「干木布衣也,君軾其廬,不以甚乎?」文侯曰:「段干木不趨勢利,隱處乎窮巷,聲馳千里,敢不軾乎?」文侯以名過齊桓公者,蓋能尊段干木、敬卜子夏、友田子方故也。
又曰:公儀潛,魯人。與子思為友。穆公因子思而致命,欲以為相。子思曰:「公儀子逾所以不至也,君若饑渴待賢,納用其謀,雖蔬食飲水,伋亦愿在下風。如以高官厚祿為釣餌,而無信用之心,公儀子智若魚者可也。不爾,則不逾君之庭。且臣不佞,又不能為君操竿下釣,以傷守節之士。」潛竟終身不屈。
又曰:王斗,齊人也。脩道不仕,與顏歜并時。曾造齊宣王門,欲見宣王。宣王使謁者延斗入,斗曰:「趨見王為好勢,趨見斗為好士,於王何如?」謁者還報。王曰:「先生徐之,寡人請從。」王趨而迎之於門,曰:「寡人奉先君之宗廟社稷,愿聞先生直言正諫。」斗曰:「王之憂國愛民,不若王之愛尺之縠。」王曰:「何謂?」斗曰:「王使為冠,不使左右便辟,而使工者,何也?為能之也。今王治齊國,非左右便辟則無使也。臣故曰不如愛尺之縠也。」王乃謝曰:「寡人有罪於國家矣。」於是舉士五人,任之以官。齊國大治,王斗之力也。
又曰:黔婁先生者,齊人也。修身清節,不求進諸侯。魯恭公聞其賢,遣使致禮,賜粟三千鍾,欲以為相。辭不受。齊王又禮之,以黃金百斤聘以為卿,又不就。著書四篇,言道家之務,號曰《黔婁子》。終身不屈,以壽終。
又曰:原憲居環堵之室,甕牖桑樞,上漏下濕,缊衣無表,手足胼胝,三日不舉火,十年不制衣,坐而彈琴。子貢相衛,結駟連騎,排藜藿,入窮閭,巷不容軒,來見憲。憲韋冠杖藜而出,應門,正冠則纓絕,斂衽則肘見,納履則踵決。子貢曰:「嘻!先生何病也?」憲笑曰:「憲聞之,無財謂之貧,學道而不能行者謂之病。若憲,貧也,非病也。若夫仁義之慝,車馬之飾,憲不忍為。」子貢逡巡,面有慚色,終身恥其言之過也。
又曰:曾參字子羽。魯哀公致邑焉,參辭不受,曰:「吾聞受人者常畏人,與人者常驕人。縱君不我驕,我豈無畏乎?」

又曰:披裘公者,吳人。延陵季子出游,見道中有遺金,顧而睹公曰:「取彼金。」公投鐮,瞋目,拂手而言曰:「何子處之高而視之卑?五月披裘而負薪,豈取金者哉!」季子大驚,既謝而問姓名。公曰:「子皮相之士,何足語姓名哉!」
又曰:江上丈人者,楚人也。楚平王以費無忌之讒殺伍奢,奢子員士將奔吳,至江上,欲渡無舟,而楚人購員甚急。自恐不脫,見丈人得渡,因解所佩劍以與丈人,曰:「此千金之劍也,愿獻之。」丈人不受,曰:「楚國之法,得伍胥者,爵執珪,金千鎰,吾尚不取,何用劍為?」不受而別,莫知其誰。員至吳為相,求丈人不能得,每食輒祭之,曰:「名可得聞而不可得見,其惟江上丈人乎?」
又曰:漁父者,楚人也。見楚亂,乃匿名隱釣於江濱。楚頃襄王時,屈原為三閭大夫,名顯於諸侯。為上官靳尚所譖,王怒,遷之江濱,被發行吟於澤畔。漁父見而問之曰:「子非三閭大夫歟?何故至於斯?」原曰:「舉世混濁而我獨清,眾人皆醉而我獨醒,是以見放。」漁父曰:「夫聖人不凝滯於萬物,故能與世推移。舉世混濁,何不隨其流,揚其波,汩其泥?眾人皆醉,何不餔其糟,歠其醨?何故懷瑾握瑜,自令放焉?」乃歌曰:「滄浪之水清,可以濯吾纓;滄浪之水濁,可以濯吾足。」遂去,深自閉匿,人莫知焉。
又曰:河上丈人者,不知何國人也。明老子之術,自匿姓名,居河之湄,著《老子章句》,故世號曰河上丈人。當戰國之末,諸侯交爭,馳說之士咸以權勢相傾,惟丈人隱身脩道,老而不虧,專業於安期先生,為道家之宗焉。
又曰:樂臣公者,宋人也。其先宋公族,其後別從趙趙其族樂毅顯名於諸侯,而臣公獨好黃老,恬靜不仕。及趙為秦昭王滅,臣公東之齊,以《老子》顯名,齊人尊之,號稱賢師。趙人田叔等皆師事之。
又曰:蓋公者,齊之膠西人也。明《老子》,師事樂臣公。楚漢之起,齊人爭往于世主,惟蓋公獨遁居不仕。及漢定天下,曹參為齊相,延問諸儒數百人,何以治齊。人人各殊,參不知所從。蓋公善黃老,乃使人厚幣聘之。公為言治道貴清凈則民定,遂推此為類,為參言之。參悅,乃避正堂舍之,師事焉。齊果大治。及參入相漢,導蓋公之道,故天下歌之。蓋公雖為參師,然未嘗仕,以終壽。
又曰:四皓者,皆河內軹人也。或在汲。一曰東園公,二曰角里先生,三曰綺里季,四曰夏黃公。皆脩道潔已,非義不動。秦始皇時,見秦政虐,乃退入藍田山而作歌曰:「莫莫高山,深谷逶迤;曄曄紫芝,可以療饑;唐虞世遠,吾將何歸?駟馬高蓋,其憂甚大。富貴之畏人,不如貧賤之肆志。」乃共入商洛,隱地肺山,以待天下定。及秦敗,漢高聞之,征之不至。深自匿終南山,不能屈也。
又曰:黃石公者,下邳人也。遭秦亂,自隱姓名,時人莫能知者。初,張良易姓為張,自匿下邳,步游沂水圯上,與黃石公相遇,衣褐衣而老,墜履圯下,顧謂良曰:「孺子取履!」良素不知,乍愕然,欲毆之。為其老也,強忍下取履,因跪進焉。公笑以足受而去。良殊驚。公行里許,還,謂良曰:「孺子可教也。後五日平明,與我期此。」良愈怪之,復跪曰:「諾。」五日平旦,良往,公怒曰:「與老人期,何后也?後五日早會!」良雞鳴往,公又先在,怒曰:「何后?復五日早會!」良夜半往,有頃,公亦至,喜曰:「當如是。」乃出一篇書與良,曰:「讀是,則為王者師。後十二年,孺子見濟北穀城山下黃石即我。」遂去不見。良旦視其書,乃是《太公兵法》。良異之,因講習以說他人,莫能用。后與沛公遇於陳留,沛公用其言,輒有功。後十三年,從高祖過濟北穀城山下,得黃石公,良乃寶祠之。及良死,與石并葬焉。
又曰:魯二征士者,皆魯人也。高祖定天下,即皇帝位,博士叔孫通白征魯諸儒三十餘人,欲定漢儀禮。二士獨不肯,罵通曰:「天下初定,死傷者未起,而欲起禮樂。禮樂所由起,百年之德而後可舉。吾不忍為公所為也。公所為不合古,吾不行也。公往矣,無污我!」通不敢致而去。
又曰:安期先生者,瑯琊人。受學河上丈人,賣藥海邊,老而不仕。時人謂之千歲公。秦始皇東游,請與語三夜,賜金璧,值數千萬。出,置阜鄉亭而去,赤玉舄為報,留書與始皇曰:「後數十年,求我於蓬萊山下。」及秦敗,安期先生與其友蒯通同往見項羽。羽欲封之,卒不肯受。見《列仙傳》。
又曰:東郭先生者,與其友梁石君俱修道,隱居不仕。曹參為齊相,尊禮士。范陽人蒯通為參客,入見參曰:「婦人有夫死三日嫁者,有幽居守寡不出門者,足下即欲求婦,何取?」參曰:「取不嫁者。」通曰:「然則求臣亦由是也。彼東郭先生、梁石君,齊之雋士也。今隱,未嘗卑節下意以求仕,愿足下禮之。」遂致禮聘,二人終不仕。齊人美焉。
又曰:田何字子莊,齊人也。自孔子授《易》,世傳至何。及秦焚學,以《易》為卜筮之書,獨不焚。故何傳之不絕。漢興,何以齊諸田徙社,故號曰社田生。以《易》受弟子東武王仲、洛陽周王孫丁寬、齊服生、梁項生等,皆顯當世。惠帝時,何年老家貧,守道不仕,帝親幸其廬。以受業。終為《易》者宗。
又曰:王生者,漢文景時人也。善為黃老,退居不仕,與南陽張釋之交。當時釋之為公車令,太子與梁王共入朝,不下司馬門。釋之劾奏太子不敬。文帝善之,遷至廷尉,及文帝崩,太子代立為帝,是謂景帝。釋之懼,稱病欲去。用王生計,乃見上謝之,景帝不過也。王生平常與釋之及公卿會庭中立,生襪解,顧謂釋之,前跪而系之。既退,或讓生曰:「獨奈何辱張廷尉,使跪系襪乎?」生曰:「吾年老,老且賤矣。自度終無益張廷尉。廷尉方為天下名臣,吾豈敢恥廷尉使系襪乎?欲重之。」諸公聞之,皆賢王生而重張廷尉。
