仲夏之月,日在東井,昏亢中,旦危中。其日丙丁。其帝炎帝,其神祝融。其蟲羽。其音徵,律中賓。其數七。其味苦,其臭焦。其祀灶,祭先肺。
Yue Ling:
In the second month of summer the sun is in the eastern Jing, the constellation culminating at dusk being Kang, and that culminating at dawn Wei. Its days are ping and ting. Its divine ruler is Yan Di, and the (attending) spirit is Gu-rong. Its creatures are the feathered. Its musical note is Zhi, and its pitch-tube is Rui Bin. Its number is seven. Its taste is acrid. Its smell is that of things burning. Its sacrifice is that at the furnace; and of the parts of the victim the lungs have the foremost place.

8 雜記上:
大夫卜宅與葬日,有司麻衣、布衰、布帶,因喪屨,緇布冠不。占者皮弁。如筮,則史練冠長衣以筮。占者朝服。
Za Ji I:
When they were divining by the tortoise-shell about the grave and the day of interment of a Great officer, the officer superintending (the operation) wore an upper robe of sackcloth, with (strips of) coarser cloth (across the chest), and a girdle of the same and the usual mourning shoes. His cap was of black material, without any fringe. The diviner wore a skin cap. If the stalks were employed, then the manipulator wore a cap of plain silk, and the long robe. The reader of the result wore his court robes.

大白冠,緇布之冠,皆不。委武玄縞而後
Za Ji I:
The white cap of high (antiquity) and the cap of black cloth were both without any ornamental fringe. The azure-coloured and that of white silk with turned-up rim had such a fringe.

孔子至齊郭門之外,遇一嬰兒挈一壺,相與俱行,其視精,其心正,其行端,孔子謂御曰:「趣驅之,趣驅之。」韶樂方作,孔子至彼,聞韶三月不知肉味。故樂非獨以自樂也,又以樂人;非獨以自正也,又以正人矣哉!於此樂者,不圖為樂至於此。黃帝詔伶倫作為音律,伶倫自大夏之西,乃之崑崙之陰,取竹於嶰谷,以生竅厚薄均者,斷兩節間,其長九寸而吹之,以為黃鐘之宮,日含少次,制十二管,以崑崙之下,聽鳳之鳴,以別十二律,其雄鳴為六,雌鳴亦六,以比黃鐘之宮,適合黃鐘之宮,皆可生之,而律之本也。故曰黃鐘微而均,鮮全而不傷,其為宮獨尊,象大聖之德,可以明至賢之功,故奉而薦之于宗廟,以歌迎功德,世世不忘。是故黃鐘生林鐘,林鐘生大呂,大呂生夷則,夷則生太簇,太簇生南呂,南呂生夾鐘,夾鐘生無射,無射生姑洗,姑洗生應鐘,應鐘生賓。三分所生,益之以一分以上生;三分所生,去其一分以下生。黃鐘、大呂、太簇、夾鐘、姑洗、仲呂、賓為上,林鐘、夷則、南呂、無射、應鐘為下。大聖至治之世,天地之氣,合以生風,日至則日行其風以生十二律,故仲冬短至則生黃鐘,季冬生大呂,孟春生太簇,仲春生夾鐘,季春生姑洗,孟夏生仲呂,仲夏生賓,季夏生林鐘,孟秋生夷則,仲秋生南呂,季秋生無射,孟冬生應鐘。天地之風氣正,十二律至也。

古者、天子左五鐘,將出,則撞黃鐘,而右五鐘皆應之,馬鳴中律,駕者有文,御者有數,立則磬折,拱則抱鼓,行步中規,折旋中矩,然後太師奏升車之樂,告出也。入則撞賓,以治容貌,容貌得則顏色齊,顏色齊則肌膚安,賓有聲,鵠震馬鳴,及倮介之蟲,無不延頸以聽,在內者皆玉色,在外者皆金聲,然後少師奏升堂之樂,即席告入也。此言音樂有和,物類相感,同聲相應之義也。《詩》云:「鐘鼓樂之。」此之謂也。

閒居翫古,不交當世。感東方《客難》,及揚雄、班固、崔駰之徒。設疑以自通,乃斟酌群言。韙其是而矯其非,作《釋誨》以戒厲云爾:「有務世公子誨于華顛胡老曰:『蓋聞聖人之大寶曰位,故以仁守位,以財聚人。然則有位斯貴,有財斯富,行義達道,士之司也。故伊摯有負鼎之衒,仲尼設執鞭之言,甯子有清商之歌,百里有豢牛之事。夫如是,則聖哲之通趣,古人之明志也。夫子生清穆之世,稟醇和之靈,覃思典籍,韞櫝六經,安貧樂賤,與世無營,沈精重淵,抗志高冥,包括無外,綜析無形,其已久矣。曾不能拔萃出群,揚芳飛文。登天庭,序彝倫,埽六合之穢慝,清宇宙之埃塵,連光芒于白日,屬炎氣于景雲。時逝歲暮,默而無聞。小子惑焉,是以有云。方今聖上寬明,輔弼賢知,崇英逸偉,不墜于地。德弘者建宰相而裂土,才羨者荷榮祿而蒙賜。盍亦回塗要至,俛仰取容。輯當世之利,定不拔之功。榮家宗于此時,遺不滅之令蹤。夫獨未之思邪,何為守彼而不通此?』胡老慠然而笑曰:『若公子所謂覩曖昧之利,而忘昭晢之害。專必成之功,而忽蹉跌之敗者已。』公子謖爾斂袂而興曰:『胡為其然也。』胡老曰:『居!吾將釋汝。昔自太極,君臣始基,有羲皇之洪寧。唐虞之至時,三代之隆,亦有緝熙。五伯扶微,勤而撫之,于斯已降。天綱縱,人紘弛。王塗壞,太極阤。君臣土崩,上下瓦解。于是智者騁詐,辯者馳說;武夫奮勇,戰士講銳;電駭風馳,霧散雲披。變詐乖詭,以合時宜。或畫一策而綰萬金,或談崇朝而錫瑞珪。連衡者六印磊落,合縱者駢組陸離。隆貴翕習,積富無崖。據巧蹈機,以忘其危。夫華離帝而萎,條去榦而枯。女冶容而淫,士背道而辜。人毀其滿,神疾其邪。利端始萌,害漸亦芽。速速方穀,夭夭是加。欲豐其屋,乃蔀其家。是故天地否閉,聖哲潛形。石門守晨,沮溺耦耕。顏歜抱璞,蘧瑗保生。齊人歸樂,孔子斯征。雍渠驂乘,逝而遺輕。夫豈傲主而背國乎,道不可以傾也。且我聞之日南至,則黃鍾應,融風動而魚上冰,賓統則微陰萌,蒹葭蒼而白露凝。寒暑相推,陰陽代興。運極則化,理亂相承。今大漢紹陶唐之洪烈,盪四海之殘災。隆隱天之高,拆絙地之基。皇道惟融,帝猷顯丕。汦汦庶類,含甘吮滋。檢六合之群品,躋之乎雍熙。群僚恭己于職司,聖主垂拱乎兩楹。君臣穆穆,守之以平。濟濟多士,端委縉綎。鴻漸盈階,振鷺充庭。譬猶鍾山之玉,泗濱之石,累珪璧不為之盈,采浮磬不為之索。曩者洪源辟而四隩集,武功定而干戈戢,玁狁攘而吉甫宴,城濮捷而晉凱入。故當其有事也,則蓑笠竝載,擐甲揚鋒,不給于務。當其無事也。則舒紳緩佩,鳴玉以步,綽有餘裕。夫世臣閥子,𥊍御之族。天隆其祐,主豐其祿。抱膺從容,爵位自從。攝須理髥,餘官委貴。其進取也,順傾轉圓,不足以喻其便。逡巡放屣,不足以況其易。夫夫有逸群之才,人人有優贍之智。童子不問疑于老成,瞳矇不稽謀于先生。心恬澹于守高,意無為于持盈。粲乎煌煌,莫非華榮。明哲泊焉,不失所寧。狂淫振蕩,乃亂其情。貪夫徇財,夸者死權。瞻仰此事,體躁心煩。闇謙盈之效,迷損益之數。騁駑駘于脩路,慕騏驥而增驅。卑俯乎外戚之門,乞助乎近貴之譽。榮顯未副從而顛踣。下獲熏胥之辜,高受滅家之誅。前車已覆,襲軌而騖。曾不鑒禍以知畏懼,予誰悼哉,害其若是。天高地厚,跼而蹐之。怨豈在明,患生不思。戰戰兢兢,必慎厥尤。且用之則行,聖訓也;舍之則藏,至順也。夫九河盈溢,非一凷所防;帶甲百萬,非一勇所抗。今子責匹夫以清宇宙,庸可以水旱而累堯湯乎?懼煙炎之毀熸,何光芒之敢揚哉?且夫地將震而樞星直,井無景則日陰食。元首寬則望舒眺,侯王肅則月側匿。是以君子推微達著,尋端見緒,履霜知冰,踐露知暑。時行則行,時止則止。消息盈沖,取諸天紀。利用遭泰,可與處否。樂天知命,持神任己,群車方奔乎險路,安能與之齊軌。思危難而自豫,故在賤而不恥。方將騁馳乎典籍之崇塗,休息乎仁義之淵藪,盤旋乎周孔之庭宇。揖儒墨而與為友,舒之足以光四表,收之則莫能知其所有。若乃丁千載之運,應神靈之符,闓閶闔,乘天衢,擁華蓋,奉皇樞。納玄策于聖德,宣太平于中區,計合謀從,己之圖也。勳績不立,予之辜也。龜鳳山翳,霧露不除。踊躍草萊,祗見其愚。不知我者,將謂之迂。脩業思真,棄此焉如。靜以俟命,不斁不渝,百歲之後,歸乎其居。幸其獲稱,天所誘也。罕漫而已,非己咎也。昔伯翳綜聲于鳥語,葛盧辨音于鳴牛。董父受氏于豢龍,奚仲供德于衡輈。倕氏興政于巧工,造父登御于驊騮。非子享土于善圉,狼瞫取右于禽囚,弓父畢精于筋角,佽非明勇于赴流,壽王創基于格五,東方要幸于談優,上官效力于執蓋,弘羊據相于運籌。僕不能參迹于若人,故抱璞而優遊。』于是公子仰首降階,忸怩而避。胡老乃揚衡含笑,援琴而歌。歌曰:『練予心兮浸太清,滌穢濁兮存正靈。和液畼兮神氣寧,情志泊兮心亭亭。嗜欲息兮無由生,踔宇宙而遺俗兮,眇翩翩而獨征。』」
