問孟、程所論才同異。曰:「才只一般能為之謂才。」問:「集注說『孟子專指其出於性者言之,程子兼指其稟於氣者言之』,又是如何?」曰:「固是。要之,才只是一箇才,才之初,亦無不善。緣他氣稟有善惡,故其才亦有善惡。孟子自其同者言之,故以為出於性;程子自其異者言之,故以為稟於氣。大抵孟子多是專以性言,故以為性善,才亦無不善。到周子程子張子,方始說到氣上。要之,須兼是二者言之方備。只緣孟子不曾說到氣上,覺得此段話無結殺,故有後來荀揚許多議論出。韓文公亦見得人有不同處,然亦不知是氣稟之異,不妨有百千般樣不同,故不敢大段說,只說『性有三品』。不知氣稟不同,豈三品所能盡耶!」

「論性不論氣,不備;論氣不論性,不明。」蓋本然之性,只是至善。然不以氣質而論之,則莫知其有昏明塞,剛柔強弱,故有所不備。徒論氣質之性,而不自本原言之,則雖知有昏明塞、剛柔強弱之不同,而不知至善之源未嘗有異,故其論有所不明。須是合性與氣觀之,然後盡。蓋性即氣,氣即性也。若孟子專於性善,則有些是「論性不論氣」;韓愈三品之說,則是「論氣不論性」。端蒙
