艺之兴也,其由民心之有智乎?造艺者将以有理乎?民生而心知物,知物而欲作,欲作而事繁,事繁而莫之能理也。故圣人因智以造艺,因艺以立事,二者近在乎身,而远在乎物,艺者所以旌智饰能统事御群也。圣人之所不能已也。艺者、所以事成德者也,德者、以道率身者也。艺者、德之枝叶也,德者、人之根干也,斯二物者不偏行,不独立。木无枝叶则不能丰其根干,故谓之瘣;人无艺则不能成其德,故谓之野。若欲为夫君子,必兼之乎!先王之欲人之为君子也,故立保民,掌教六艺:一曰五礼,二曰六乐,三曰五射,四曰五御,五曰六书,六曰九数。。大胥掌学士之版,春入学舍,采合万舞,秋班学合声,讽诵讲习,不解于时,故《》曰:“菁菁者莪,在彼中阿;既见君子,乐且有仪。”美育材,其犹人之于艺乎!既修其质,且加其文,文质著然后体全,体全然后可登乎清庙,而可羞乎王公。故君子非仁不立,非义不行,非艺不治,非容不庄。四者无愆,而圣贤之器就矣。《》曰:“富有之谓大业。”其斯之谓欤!
