光宗绍熙元年二月,殿中侍御史刘光祖入对,言「近世是非不明则邪正互攻,公论不立则私情交起,此固道之消长,时之否泰,而实国家之祸福,社稷之存亡系焉,甚可畏也。本朝士大夫学术最为近古,初非有强国之术,而国势尊安,根本深厚。咸平景德之间,道臻皇极,治保太和,至于庆历嘉佑盛矣。不幸而坏于熙、丰之邪说,疏弃正士,招徕小人。幸而元佑君子起而救之,末流大分,事故反复。绍圣元符之际,群凶得志,绝灭纲常,其论既胜,其势既成,崇、观而下,尚复何言。臣始至时,闻有讥贬道学之说,而实未睹朋党之分。中更外艰,去国六载,已忧两议之各甚,而恐一旦之交攻也。逮臣复来,其事果见,因恶道学乃生朋党,因生朋党乃罪忠谏。夫以忠谏为罪,其去绍圣几何。陛下即位之初,凡所进退,率用人言,初无好恶之私,岂以偏党为主。而一岁之内,斥逐纷纷,往往纳忠之言谓为沽名之举。事势至此,循默乃已。循默成风,国家安赖。臣欲息将来之祸,故不惮反复以陈,伏冀圣心豁然,永为皇极之主,使是非由此而定,邪正由此而别,公论由此而明,私意由此而息,道学之讥由此而消,朋党之迹由此而泯,则生灵之幸,社稷之福也。不然,相激相胜,展转反复,为祸无穷,臣实未知税驾之所」帝下其章,读者至于流涕。
