第一卷學問門

胡安定公瑗,字翼之,患隋唐以來仕進尚文辭而遺經業,苟趨利祿,其教學者必以明體達用為本。初與孫明復、石守道同讀書泰山,攻苦食淡,終夜不寢。一坐十年不歸,得家書,見上有「平安」二字,好投之澗中,不復展讀。及為蘇、湖二州教授,嚴條約,以身先之。雖大暑,必公服終日,以見諸生,嚴師弟子之禮。解經至有要義,懇懇為諸生言其所以治己而後治乎人者。學徒千數,日月刮劘。為文章皆傳經義,必以理勝,信其師說,敦尚行實。其在湖州學,置經義齋、治事齋。經義齋者,擇疏通有器局者居之;治事齋者,人各治一事,又兼一事,如治民、治兵,水利書數之類。其在太學亦然。其子弟散在四方,隨其人賢愚,皆循循雅飭,其言談舉止,遇之不問,知為先生弟子。門人劉彞召對策略曰:「臣少從學於安定先生胡瑗,以道德仁義教東南諸生。臣聞聖人之道,有體、有用、有文。君臣父子,仁義禮樂,歷世不可變者,其體也;詩書史傳,垂法後世者,其文也;舉而措之,天下能潤澤其民,歸於皇極者,其用也。國家累朝取士,不以體用為本,而尚聲律浮華之詞,是以風俗俞薄。臣師瑗當明道、寶元之間,以體用之學授諸生,故今學者明夫聖人體用以為政教之本者,臣師之力也。」胡安定為國子先生日,番禺大商遣其子就學,得病甚瘠,客于逆旅,若將斃焉。父至,攜其子來謁。胡先生曰:「是宜先警其心,而後誘之以道。」乃取一帙書曰:「汝讀是,可以先知養生之術。知養生之後,可以進學。」子視其書,黃帝《素問》也。讀之未竟,懼伐性命之過,甚悔痛自責,冀可自新。胡知其已悟,召而誨之,曰:「知愛身則可以修身。自今以始,其洗心向道,取聖賢之書,次第讀之,既通其義,然後為文,則汝可以成名。聖人不貴無過,而貴改過。無媿昔悔,第勉事業。」其人亦穎銳善學,二三年登上第而歸。胡安定先生,明道、景間與孫明復、石守道三人以師道自任,而先生之徒獨盛。在湖州學,弟子往來嘗數百人,各以其經轉相傳授。其教學之法最備,行之數年,東南之士,莫不以仁義禮樂為學。慶歷間,建太學于京師,有司下湖州學,取先生學法,行之太學。皇、至和間,以先生判國子監,執經座下,生徒千餘人,每講罷,或引當世之事以明之。教育諸生皆有法。
