第六篇 釋解意不可滅,並論死後必有天堂地獄之賞罰,以報世人所為善惡

西士曰:聖人之敎在經傳,其勸善必以賞,其沮惡必以懲矣。《舜典》曰:「象以典刑:流宥五刑。」又曰:「三載考績,三考黜陟幽明。庶績成熙,分北三苗。」《皐陶謨》曰:「天命有德,五服五章哉!天討有罪,五刑五用哉!」《益稷》謨二〕曰:「帝曰:迪朕德,時乃功惟敘。皐陶方祗厥敘,万施象刑,惟明。」《盤庚》曰:「無有遠週,用罪伐厥死,用德彰厥善。邦之臧惟汝眾,邦之不臧惟予一人佚罰。」又曰:「乃有不吉不迪,顛越不恭,暫遇奸充,我乃剽殄滅之,無育,無俾易種于兹新邑。」《泰誓》武王曰:「爾基士 ,其尚迪果毅,以登乃辟。功多有厚賞,不迪有顯戮。」又曰:「爾所弗勖,其于爾躬有戮。」《康誥》曰:「乃其速由文王作罰,刑兹無赦。」《多士》曰:「爾克敬,天惟畀矜爾;爾不克敬»爾不啻不有爾土,予亦致天之罰于爾躬。」《多方》又曰:「爾乃惟逸惟頗大'遠王命,則惟爾多方探天之威,我則致夭之罰,離逖爾土。」此二帝三代之語,皆言賞罰,固皆併利害言之。

西士曰:來世之利害甚真,大非今世之可比也。吾今所見者,利害之影耳。故今世之事,或凶或吉,俱不足言也。吾聞師之喻曰:人生世間:如俳優在戲場,所為俗業,如搬演雜劇。諸帝王,宰官,士人,奴隸,后妃,婢媵,皆一時妝飾之耳。則其所衣衣,非其衣,所逢利害,不及其躬。搬演既畢,解去妝飾,漫然不復相關。故俳優不以分位高卑長短為憂喜,惟扮所承腳色,雖丐子亦真切為之,以中主人之意耳已。蓋分位在他,充位在我,吾曹在于兹世,雖百歲之久,較之後世萬祀之無窮,烏足以當冬之一日乎?所得財物,假貸為用,非我為之真主,何徒以增而悅、以減而愁?不論君子小人,咸赤身空出,赤身空返,臨終而去,雖金千笈,積在庫內,不帶一毫,何必以是為留意哉?今世偽事已終,即後世之真清起矣,而後乃各取其所宜之貴賤也。若以今世利害為真,何異乎蠢民看戯,以妝帝王者為真貴人,以妝奴隸者為真下人乎?意之為情,精粗不齊。負敎世之責者,孰先布其粗,而後不闡其精,必既切琢,而後磋磨矣。需醫者,惟病者,非謂瘳者也。需吾敎者,惟小人耳已,君子固自知之。故敎宜曲就小人之意也。孔子至衞,見民眾,欲先富而後敎之,詬不知敎為滋重乎?但小民由利而後可迪乎義耳。
