「五行一陰陽也,陰陽一太極也。」二語本周子《太極圖說》。然夫子繫《易》則曰:「易有大極,是生兩儀。」是言大極生兩儀,非大極一兩儀也。如兩儀乃陰陽之呈形,亦不得謂陰陽即兩儀也。且大字固包太字義,泰、太通,經書無太字,亦不當直加點作太也。凡物皆有極,易之極,乃大極也。當物未有極,易之極,乃太極也。周子之學純粹,為後儒法,本不當議,然亦有不可不辨者。漢儒講學往往實事求是,宋人則不免有空談,此風氣然也。既名為圖說,則當言圖之所以然。《易》注:「極者,無稱之稱,不可得而名也。」又諸家皆曰:「太極者,其理也。」此空談之明徵也。何以畫○?古圜字也。此圜惟《易》有之,《易·乾》圜周,《易·乾》為天、為圜,日月周天皆圜象,故為圜先為君、為父而言之也。《說文》詁極曰:「棟也。」詁棟曰:「極也。」丨讀若袞,引而上行,讀若囟,引而下行,讀若𨓆。丨畫自下而上,易之例。●,《易·乾》圜下極至北極,上極至南極。極,至也。下畫而上,當中央位,是棟極象,此為「易有大極,是生兩儀。」丨在中央,便將○分為兩列。《易》曰:「〈乾〉、〈坤〉成列,而易行乎其中矣。」〈乾〉、〈坤〉之道,左陽儀,右陰儀,從|畫分出,此大極生兩儀也。一至而二分,南北為至,冬至、夏至言至,東西為分,春分、秋分言分。古人稱謂之間,一絲不容假借也。〈乾〉一即〈乾〉乙。易大極始〈乾〉西北亥,〈大過〉下天一本,乃棟極也。〈大過〉「棟隆吉」是也。|為極,易立其中,乙為極,易行其中。一,乙也。●,行乎其中,則陰陽盈虛消長從此而生。此盈則彼虛,此虛則彼盈,間不容髮也。易大極為天地乾,貞者,事之乾也。貞在北,木生自下,而上幹天乾也。何以知之?〈坤〉「暢於四支」,地支也。〈乾〉乾立極,有〈坤〉。乙,兩儀所自出。〇,乙是也。天地之數從一而二,即一二,漸而四,而八,〈漸卦〉「可用為儀」是也。●,極橫畫,是一二之一,《說文》:「惟初大始,道立於一,造分天地。」《易》曰:「天地設位。」即此位也。●,卯酉地平,上皆天也。故曰天道猶張弓也,又曰天形如覆笠。●,卯酉天平,下皆地也。是以日出地值卯,日入地值酉也。天得一以清,地得一以寧,分陽形而上者天,分陰形而下者地。此極南北一至,儀東西二分,從直●畫為橫一,上下位定,先天〈坎〉、〈離〉,日月行乎其中矣。曰建首,實也,從●,又從●。月建首,闕也,從●。明字從●,皆不離乎本也。本即大極圖也。一橫一豎,合而為十。●,兩儀生四象也。極者,還而至之之辭,四象從兩儀於中央,春分、秋分、冬至、夏至,極還為四時也。從此四時生八卦,生生不已,無物不有,無時不然。「皇建有極」,極,棟也。故言建說云:二五之精妙,合而凝極。亟字從二五,是十方,則亦有訓詁之義焉。他如仁義善惡,理固能包,而非大極圖說也,姑弗論云。
