譚適既冠,其父奉政,公字之曰立之,公之友為作字者凡三,復以請於余,余何言哉?夫遵其途而有行者,適也,至其所而有定者,立也,立不難而適難,世有慕京國而遊思故家而還者,其行也患不致爾,苟至覩京國之麗,得故家之安,豈有不定於其所者哉?余故曰立不難。今夫適萬里者,不知其歴,幾亭堠,幾都邑,幾山川而後至十里至某,如是者以千計,百里至某,如是者以百計,千里至某,如是者以十計其途,有正者、有它者、有徑者、有岐者、出門而迷者有焉,中路而迷者有焉,行已十之九而迷者有焉,迷而復,猶可迷而不復,終不致矣,予故曰適為難顔子聖門之第一人也,其行猶不無差,失者其復能不逺而已,世豈多顔氏子,而謂吾行必不迷而能至也,可乎?適也!欲遵何途,欲至何所?余若復舉陳編腐談以凟告,而曰:此之謂適,此之謂立,是不誠於心,無益於事而負子之請也,謹不敢子,其問途於已至之人,適之而繇其途,則至之而立其所也必矣。子歸,以余言白於公,公以為如何?

如有所立卓爾此言,顔子見孔子之道,如有一物,卓然立於其前,欲至之而不可至,葢設喻之,非言已之所立也。揚子雲曰:顔苦孔之卓,是已張仲黙二子《字說》。

河北馬仲溫之子名振,名拯,名授,名持名揖,其字曰舉,曰用,曰立,曰敬,曰肅,請予即字為說以教戒之。予曰:「古者丈夫之冠也,賔字之,柷之以。後世因是乃有說其字之義以寓教戒者,若「子」之字前定也乆矣,而子復何說哉?請不置,則曰昔聞郢相詒書於燕,相史誤筆舉燭二字,燕相推其說,遵而行之,燕國大治。夫其所推之說,非郢書意也,而能有益於燕國。今求有益於若子,亦以燕說說,可乎?舉也,用也。仕者,事立也,敬也,肅也,學者事仕而學,學而仕,相資不相離也,欲獲舉於上,必有用於世,欲獲用於世,必有立於已立己之道,如之何?內敬外肅而已。立者守之,固敬者心之一。肅者,貌之荘肅,斯能敬敬,斯能立立,斯可用用,斯可舉矣。振拯伯仲、叔季間究五字之義,而交盡其所當然,則由己及人,何所施而不可?苟五字之約弗之究,雖五車之博奚益,是為馬氏五子字說》?

宏齋包公之彌甥呉良金,字仲堅,請訓戒之,以說其字。予曰:金之所以為良者,以其堅故,是以經火百煉,而其重不虧。人之心主於天理,則堅徇於人欲。則柔堅者,凡世間利害禍福、貧富貴賤,舉不足以移易其心,柔則外物之誘,僅如毫毛,而心已為之動矣。堅歟,柔歟?惟子所擇,包公學吾陸子之學,其剖决於理欲之幾,必有其說,亦嘗聞之否乎?予言何益於子哉?
