[三章]錫即銀。古人銀、錫不分,稱銀亦曰「錫」。禹貢「惟金三品」,為黃、白、赤三色。史平準書,「黃金為上,白金為中,赤金為下」,即三品之義。「黃金」,金也;「白金」,銀也;「赤金」,銅也。金本為金、銀、銅、錫、鐵、鉛之總名,其鐵、鉛以賤故不列「三品」之內,而錫即屬於銀,統名「白金」也。考工記攻金之工皆曰「金、錫」,金即銅,錫即銀,故曰金幾分,錫居幾,以為斧、斤、戟、刃之屬。「●氏為量,煎金、錫,聲中黃鐘之宮」。假如以今之錫,豈可攙和作斧、斤、戟、刃,而量安能聲中宮乎自爾雅曰,「黃金謂之,白金謂之銀,錫謂之鈏」,始分銀、錫之名,而單以銀為白金。此周末秦人之論也。然史平準書、漢食貨志猶皆稱「銀錫」,又言「漢武帝造銀錫為白金」,其稱皆近古。說文則釋錫曰「銀、鉛之間」,蓋亦疑之而無可為辭,故如是云耳。今世錫與鉛近,與銀則絕遠,豈銀、鉛之間哉!此予昔時庸言錄中語,今錄于此。又閱何玄子於此詩論錫亦見及之,益信其有同然。然予論有異何處,不全同也。「寬、綽」,書無逸曰「不寬綽厥心」,則古蓋以「寬、綽」為善字,後世鮮用矣!「猗」,倚也。倚車之時而覺其寬綽,又不言其言語若何,而但言「善戲謔」,皆一往摹神。古人體察之妙如此,其心坎非後世人所易測也。
