14  | 狄員外的兒子狄希陳起先都是附在人家學堂裏讀書，從八歲上學，讀到這一年，長成十二歲，長長大大，標標致致的一個好學生，凡百事情，無般不識的伶俐；只到了這「詩云」「子曰」，就如糨糊一般。從八歲到十二歲，首尾五年，自「趙錢孫李」讀起，倒也讀到那「則亦無有乎爾」。卻是讀過的書，一句也背不出；讀過的字，一畫也寫不來。一來也是先生不好，書不管你背與不背，判了一個號帖，就完了一日的工夫。三日判上個「溫」字，并完了三日的工夫。砌了一本仿，叫大學生起個影格，丟把與你，憑他倒下畫，豎下畫。沒人指教寫，便胡塗亂抹，完了三四十張的紙。你要他把那寫過的字認得一個，也是不能的。若說甚對課調平仄、講故事、讀古文，這是不用提起的了。這一年十二月十五，早早的放了年下的學，回到家中，叫人捍炮仗，買鬼臉，尋琉璃喇叭，踢天弄井，無所不至。 |
