《卷一》
2  | 以海中荒岛而置郡邑，实创所未有。其以台湾名者，袭乎旧，第未知昉自何时。或曰地在东隅，形似弯弓；或曰山横海峤，望之若台，民居廛市，又在沙曲水汇之处；地之得名以此。明末莆田周婴东番记又称台员，未知何据。大抵闽音「湾」、「员」相近，故涉笔者亦因之混耳。愚谓岛夷僻在穷海，鳞介与伍，书契茫昧，龈腭咿嚘，安得有地形字义可以旁佛？意明嘉、万间，海寇奸民迭来窜踞，时因墟立市，即境呼名，差为近是。否则，音之不通，义于何取，臆度者毋乃词费耶？ |
