說曰:冠義云:「冠者,禮之始也。凡人之所以為人者,禮義也。禮義之始,在於正容體,齊顏色,順辭令,而後禮義備,以正君臣,親父子,和長幼。故冠而後服備,服備而後容體正,顏色齊,辭令順。古者聖王重冠,所以為國本也。」五經要義云:「冠,嘉禮也。冠,首服也。首服既加,而後人道備,故君子重之,以為禮之始矣。孔子曰:『正其衣冠,尊其瞻視,儼然人望而畏之。』又曰『不莊以蒞之,則民不敬』。此人君早冠之義也。王教之本,不可以童子之道理焉。」或云:「周禮雖有服冕之數,而無天子冠文。又儀禮云公侯冠禮者,王肅、鄭玄皆以為夏末衰亂,篡弒所由生焉,故作公侯冠禮,則明無天子冠禮之審也。又無大夫冠禮,古者五十而後爵,何大夫冠禮之有。周人五十而有賢才,則試以大夫之事,猶行士禮。故筮日筮賓,冠於阼以著代,醮於客位,三加彌尊,皆士禮也者。」今按:大戴禮有公冠篇云:「公冠四加,天子亦四加。」又家語冠頌云:「王太子之冠,擬諸侯之冠;天子之元子,亦擬諸侯四加;諸侯之子同於士。」據此,自天子至於諸侯,非無冠禮,但因秦焚書,遂同蕩滅。其周制士冠禮,頗備,王者時採行焉。
