《列子》曰:夫有形者生於無形,則天地安從生?自然而生。故有太易、太初、太始、太素。此有物之始,自微至著,變化自相因襲太易者未見氣也易者,不窮滯之稱,凝寂于太虛之域,將何見乎?即如《易系》之太極、老氏之混成。太初者氣之始也,陰陽未判。下句所謂渾淪。太始者形之始也,陰陽既判,品物流形。太素者質之始也。質,性也。既為物矣。則方圓剛柔靜躁各有其性。氣質具,未相離,此直論氣之形質,不復說太易,為三者宗本。下句別自明之。故曰渾淪。渾淪者,言萬物相渾淪而未相離也。雖渾然一氣不相離襲,而三才之道實潛兆乎其中。淪,語助也。視之不見,聽之不聞,循之不得,故曰易也。易無形畔,老子曰:視之不見名曰希而曰易。易,簡之別稱也。太易之義如此而已,故能為萬物宗,性真一而不變也。易變而為一,所謂易者,窈冥忽恍,不可變也。一氣持之而化變,故寄名變也。一變而為七,七變而為九。九,變者之究也,究,窮也。一變而為七九,不足以次數者全,舉陽數顧其都會也。乃復變而為一。一者,形變之始。既涉於有形之域,理數既終,乃復反而為一。反而為一,歸形變之始也。此蓋明變化往復無極
