子魚名鮒甲。陳人或謂之子鮒,或稱孔甲。陳勝既立為王,其妻之父兄往焉。勝以眾賓待之,長揖不拜,無加其禮。其妻之父怒曰:「怙亂僣號而傲長者,不能久矣。」不辭而去。陳王跪謝,遂不為顧。王心慚焉,遂適博士太師之館而言曰:「予雖丈夫哉,然塞於禮義,以啟於姻婭,唯先生幸訓誨之,使免於戾乎。」子魚曰:「王所問者、善也。敢固無辭而對乎?今以禮言耶?則禮無不拜,且宗族婚媾,又與眾賓異敬者也。敬而加親,自以然也。」王曰:「雖已失之於前,庶欲收之於後也。願先王脩明其事,必奉遵焉。」對曰:「昔唐堯內親九族,外協萬邦。禮以婚為昆弟,妻之父母為外舅姑。由是明之,則拜之可知。夫婚親之義,非宗賢之類也,雖自己臣,莫敢不敬。昔魏信陵君嘗以此質臣之父。臣之父曰:『於諸母之昆弟、妻之諸父,則以親配德。年齊以上,雖拜之可也。幼於己者、揖之可也。』此出於人情而可常者也。」王曰:「善哉!請問同姓而服不及者、其制何邪?」對曰:「先王制禮,雖國君、有合族之道,宗人掌其列,繼之以姓而無別,醊之以食而無殊,各隨本屬之隆殺、屬近則死為之兌,屬遠則吊之而已。禮之正也。是故臣之家、哭子氏之別姓於弗父之廟,哭孔氏則於夫子之廟。此有據而然也。周之道、雖百世,婚姻不通,重先世之同體也。」王跪曰:「先生之言、厥義博哉!寡人雖固,敢不盡心。」
