陳人有武臣謂子鮒曰:「夫聖人者、誠高材美稱也。吾謂聖人之智必見未形之前,功垂於身歿之後,立教而戾夫弗犯,吐言而辯事不破也。子之先君、可謂當之矣。然韓子立法,其所以異夫子之論者、紛如也。予每探其意而校其事。持久歷遠,遏姦勤善,韓氏未必非,孔氏未必得也。吾今而後乃知聖人無世不有爾。前聖後聖,法制固不一也。若韓非者、亦當世之聖人也。子以為奚若?」子鮒曰:「子信之為然,是故未免凡俗也。今世人有言高者,必以極天為稱,言下者,必以深淵為名。是資世之談而無其實者也。好事而穿鑿者、必言經以自輔,援聖以自賢,欲以取信於群愚而度其說也。若諸子之書,其義皆然。吾先君之所自志也。請略說一隅,而吾子審其信否焉。」武臣曰:「諾。」子鮒曰:「乃者、趙、韓、魏共并知氏。趙襄子之行賞,先加具臣,而後有功。《韓非書》云:『夫子善之。』引以張本,然難之。豈有不似哉!然實非也。何以明其然?昔我先君以春秋哀公十六年四月己丑卒,至二十七年荀瑤與韓、趙、魏伐鄭遇陳坦而還。是時夫子卒已十一年矣,而晉四卿皆在也。後悼公十四年知氏乃亡。此先後甚遠,而韓非公稱之,曾無怍意,則世多好事之徒,皆非之罪也。故吾以是然口於小道,塞耳於諸子久矣,而子立尺表以度天,直寸指以測淵,豫大道而不悟,信誣說以疑聖,殆非所望也。」武臣叉手跪謝,施施而退。遂告人曰:「吾自以為學之博矣,而屈於孔氏,方知學不在多,要在精之也。」
