道德之論,譬猶日月也。江南河北,不能易其指;馳騖千里,不能易其處。趨舍禮俗,猶室宅之居也,東家謂之西家,西家謂之東家,雖皋陶為之理,不能定其處。故趨舍同,誹譽在俗;意行鈞,窮達在時。湯、武之累行積善,可及也;其遭桀、紂之世,天授也。今有湯、武之意,而無桀、紂之時,而欲成霸王之業,亦不幾矣。昔武王執戈秉鉞以伐紂勝殷,搢笏杖殳以臨朝。武王既沒,殷民叛之。周公踐東宮,履乘石,攝天子之位,負扆而朝諸侯,放蔡叔,誅管叔,克殷殘商,祀文王於明堂,七年而致政成王。夫武王先武而後文,非意變也,以應時也;周公放兄誅弟,非不仁也,以匡亂也。故事周于世則功成,務合于時則名立。昔齊桓公合諸侯以乘車,退誅于國以斧鉞;晉文公合諸侯以革車,退行于國以禮義。桓公前柔而後剛,文公前剛而後柔。然而令行乎天下,權制諸侯鈞者,審於勢之變也。顏闔,魯君欲相之而不肯,使人以幣先焉,鑿培而遁之,為天下顯武。使遇商鞅、申不害,刑及三族,又況身乎!
