「烏厘嗎叉」，是廣州話才見說的辭，指「一團糟」的意思。尤其說字寫得「烏厘嗎叉」時，是說它寫得十分潦草，亂七八糟。並還又有「模糊」、「不清楚」這類的意思。
讀宋陳造《分韻得家字》詩：「詩成字敧倒，病眼正麻嗏。」
讀宋劉克莊《最高樓．六》詞「今耄矣，文跌宕，字麻嗏。」
或作「麻茶」，見《漢語大詞典．麻茶》：「模糊、迷蒙貌」。
唐李涉《題字文秀才櫻桃》詩：「今日顛狂任君笑，趂愁得醉眼麻茶。」
宋許及之《梅花．九》詩：「醉餘看字眼麻茶，佳句拈來似隔紗。」
清查愼行《重宿傳經書屋與愷功話舊次唐實君留別四道韻．一》詩：「豈意麻茶眼，重窺翰墨林。」
清沈曾植《敏齋四疊前韻促和》》詩：「自憐兩眼麻茶甚，欲乞雲光一洗來。」
……。
按「麻茶」和「麻嗏」，該以「嗏」字爲當。嗏，《康熙字典》：「語辭。」
據上所說，「麻嗏，麻茶」，就是廣州話「嗎叉」的由來。即使是以音相近有見作「媽叉」，也無妨，都是方言音釋罷了，但決不是粗言。以爲粗言者，要麼跟「嗎叉」分別，要麼不分別若一樣，則完全是後來自以爲是的認爲，是「約定俗成」成一方的以爲。
