問天子之年，When one asks about the years of the son of Heaven,
對曰： the reply should be:
「聞之：始服衣若干尺矣。」 'I have heard that he has begun to wear a robe so many feet long.'
問國君之年： When one asks about the years of the ruler of a state,
長， if he be grown up,
曰能從宗廟社稷之事矣；the reply should be: 'He is able to attend to the services in the ancestral temple, and at the altars of the spirits of the land and grain';
幼， and if he be still young,
曰未能從宗廟社稷之事也。'He is not yet able to attend to the services in the ancestral temple, and at the altars of the spirits of the land and grain.'
問大夫之子： To a question about the son of a Great officer,
長，曰能御矣；the reply, if he be grown up, should be: 'He is able to drive;'
幼，and, if he be still young,
曰未能御也。 'He is not yet able to drive.'
問士之子： To a question about the son of an (ordinary) officer,
長，曰能典謁矣；the reply, if he be grown up, should be: 'He can manage the conveying of a salutation or a message;'
幼，and, if he be still young,
曰未能典謁也。 'He cannot yet manage such a thing.'
問庶人之子： To a question about the son of a common man,
長，曰能負薪矣；the reply, if he be grown up, should be: 'He is able to carry (a bundle of) firewood;'
幼，and, if he be still young,
曰未能負薪也。 'He is not yet able to carry (such a bundle).'
