儒家 -> 禮記 -> 學記 -> 13

善學者，The skilful learner,
師逸而功倍，while the master seems indifferent, yet makes double the attainments of another,
又從而庸之； and in the sequel ascribes the merit (to the master).
不善學者， The unskilful learner,
師勤而功半，while the master is diligent with him, yet makes (only) half the attainments (of the former),
又從而怨之。 and in the sequel is dissatisfied with the master.
善問者，The skilful questioner
如攻堅木， is like a workman addressing himself to deal with a hard tree.
先其易者， First he attacks the easy parts,
後其節目， and then the knotty.
及其久也， After a long time,
相說以解；the pupil and master talk together, and the subject is explained.
不善問者反此。 The unskilful questioner takes the opposite course.
善待問者， The master who skilfully waits to be questioned,
如撞鐘， may be compared to a bell when it is struck.
叩之以小者則小鳴，Struck with a small hammer, it gives a small sound.
叩之以大者則大鳴，Struck with a great one, it gives a great sound.
待其從容， But let it be struck leisurely and properly,
然後盡其聲； and it gives out all the sound of which it is capable.
不善答問者反此。 He who is not skilful in replying to questions is the opposite of this.
此皆進學之道也。 This all describes the method of making progress in learning.
