王曰：“愿闻三剑。”'I should like to hear about the three swords,' said the king;
曰： and Zhuangzi went on,
“有天子剑， 'There is the sword of the Son of Heaven;
有诸侯剑， the sword of a feudal prince;
有庶人剑。” and the sword of a common man.'
王曰：“天子之剑何如？” 'What about the sword of the Son of Heaven?'
曰：“天子之剑，以燕溪、石城为锋， 'This sword has Yan-qi and Shi-cheng for its point;
齐、岱为锷， Qi and (Mount) Dai for its edge;
晋、魏为脊， Jin and Wei for its back;
周、宋为镡， Zhou and Song for its hilt;
韩、魏为夹， Han and Wei for its sheath.
包以四夷， It is embraced by the wild tribes all around;
裹以四时， it is wrapped up in the four seasons;
绕以渤海， it is bound round by the Sea of Bo;
带以常山， and its girdle is the enduring hills.
制以五行， It is regulated by the five elements;
论以刑德， its wielding is by means of Punish ments and Kindness;
开以阴阳， its unsheathing is like that of the Yin and Yang;
持以春夏， it is held fast in the spring and summer;
行以秋冬。 it is put in action in the autumn and winter.
此剑直之无前，When it is thrust forward, there is nothing in front of it;
举之无上，when lifted up, there is nothing above it;
案之无下，when laid down, there is nothing below it;
运之无旁，when wheeled round, there is nothing left on any side of it;
上决浮云，above, it cleaves the floating clouds;
下绝地纪。and below, it penetrates to every division of the earth.
此剑一用， Let this sword be once used,
匡诸侯， and the princes are all reformed,
天下服矣。 and the whole kingdom submits.
此天子之剑也。This is the sword of the Son of Heaven.
