王曰：「願聞三劍。」'I should like to hear about the three swords,' said the king;
曰： and Zhuangzi went on,
「有天子劍， 'There is the sword of the Son of Heaven;
有諸侯劍， the sword of a feudal prince;
有庶人劍。」 and the sword of a common man.'
王曰：「天子之劍何如？」 'What about the sword of the Son of Heaven?'
曰：「天子之劍，以燕谿、石城為鋒， 'This sword has Yan-qi and Shi-cheng for its point;
齊、岱為鍔， Qi and (Mount) Dai for its edge;
晉、魏為脊， Jin and Wei for its back;
周、宋為鐔， Zhou and Song for its hilt;
韓、魏為夾， Han and Wei for its sheath.
包以四夷， It is embraced by the wild tribes all around;
裹以四時， it is wrapped up in the four seasons;
繞以渤海， it is bound round by the Sea of Bo;
帶以常山， and its girdle is the enduring hills.
制以五行， It is regulated by the five elements;
論以刑德， its wielding is by means of Punish ments and Kindness;
開以陰陽， its unsheathing is like that of the Yin and Yang;
持以春夏， it is held fast in the spring and summer;
行以秋冬。 it is put in action in the autumn and winter.
此劍直之無前，When it is thrust forward, there is nothing in front of it;
舉之無上，when lifted up, there is nothing above it;
案之無下，when laid down, there is nothing below it;
運之無旁，when wheeled round, there is nothing left on any side of it;
上決浮雲，above, it cleaves the floating clouds;
下絕地紀。and below, it penetrates to every division of the earth.
此劍一用， Let this sword be once used,
匡諸侯， and the princes are all reformed,
天下服矣。 and the whole kingdom submits.
此天子之劍也。This is the sword of the Son of Heaven.
