孔子謂柳下季曰：Confucius spoke to Liu-xia Ji, saying,
「夫為人父者，必能詔其子；'Fathers should be able to lay down the law to their sons,
為人兄者，必能教其弟。and elder to instruct their younger brothers.
若父不能詔其子，兄不能教其弟，If they are unable to do so,
則無貴父子兄弟之親矣。they do not fulfil the duties of the relationships which they sustain.
今先生，You, Sir,
世之才士也，are one of the most talented officers of the age,
弟為盜跖，and your younger brother is this Robber Zhi.
為天下害，He is a pest in the kingdom,
而弗能教也，and you are not able to instruct him better;
丘竊為先生羞之。I cannot but be ashamed of you,
丘請為先生往說之。」and I beg to go for you and give him counsel.'
柳下季曰：「先生言『為人父者必能詔其子，為人兄者必能教其弟』，若子不聽父之詔，弟不受兄之教，雖今先生之辯，將奈之何哉？Liu-xia Ji replied, 'You say, Sir, that fathers must be able to lay down the law to their sons, and elder to instruct their younger brothers, but if sons will not listen to the orders of their fathers, nor the younger receive the lessons of their elder brothers, though one may have your powers of persuasion, what is to be done?
且跖之為人也，心如涌泉，And, moreover, Zhi is a man whose mind is like a gushing fountain,
意如飄風，and his will like a whirlwind;
強足以距敵，he is strong enough to resist all enemies,
辯足以飾非，and clever enough to gloss over his wrong-doings.
順其心則喜，If you agree with him, he is glad;
逆其心則怒，if you oppose him, he is enraged;
易辱人以言。and he readily meets men with the language of abuse.
先生必無往。You must not go to him.
