武侯曰：The marquis said,
「欲見先生久矣。'I have wished to see you, Sir, for a long time.
吾欲愛民而為義偃兵，I want to love my people, and by the exercise of righteousness to make an end of war
可乎？」 - will that be sufficient?'
徐無鬼曰： Xu Wu-gui replied,
「不可。 'By no means.
愛民，To love the people
害民之始也； is the first step to injure them.
為義偃兵，By the exercise of righteousness to make an end of war
造兵之本也。 is the root from which war is produced.
君自此為之， If your lordship try to accomplish your object in this way,
則殆不成。 you are not likely to succeed.
凡成美，All attempts to accomplish what we think good (with an ulterior end)
惡器也。 is a bad contrivance.
君雖為仁義， Although your lordship practise benevolence and righteousness (as you propose),
幾且偽哉！ it will be no better than hypocrisy.
形固造形， You may indeed assume the (outward) form,
成固有伐， but successful accomplishment will lead to (inward) contention,
變固外戰。 and the change thence arising will produce outward fighting.
君亦必無盛鶴列於麗譙之間， Your lordship also must not mass files of soldiers in the passages of your galleries and towers,
無徒驥於錙壇之宮， nor have footmen and horsemen in the apartments about your altars.
無藏逆於得， Do not let thoughts contrary to your success lie hidden in your mind;
無以巧勝人， do not think of conquering men by artifice,
無以謀勝人， or by (skilful) plans,
無以戰勝人。 or by fighting.
夫殺人之士民， If I kill the officers and people of another state,
兼人之土地， and annex its territory,
以養吾私與吾神者，to satisfy my selfish desires, while in my spirit
其戰不知孰善？ I do not know whether the fighting be good,
勝之惡乎在？ where is the victory that I gain?
君若勿已矣， Your lordship's best plan is to abandon (your purpose).
修胸中之誠， If you will cultivate in your breast the sincere purpose (to love the people),
以應天地之情而勿攖。and so respond to the feeling of Heaven and Earth, and not (further) vex yourself,
夫民死已脫矣， then your people will already have escaped death
君將惡乎用夫偃兵哉！」- what occasion will your lordship have to make an end of war?'
