夔謂蚿曰：The kui said to the millipede,
「吾以一足趻踔而行， 'With my one leg I hop about,
予無如矣。 and can hardly manage to go along.
今子之使萬足， Now you have a myriad feet which you can employ;
獨奈何？」 how is it that you are so abundantly furnished?'
蚿曰： The millipede said,
「不然。 'It is not so.
子不見夫唾者乎？Have you not seen one ejecting saliva?
噴則大者如珠， The largest portion of it is like a pearl,
小者如霧，while the smaller portions fall down like a shower of mist
雜而下者不可勝數也。 in innumerable drops.
今予動吾天機， Now I put in motion the springs set in me by Heaven,
而不知其所以然。」 without knowing how I do so.'
