道家 -> 莊子 -> 內篇 -> 齊物論 -> 3

非彼無我，If there were not (the views of) another, I should not have mine;
非我無所取。if there were not I (with my views), his would be uncalled for:
是亦近矣，-- this is nearly a true statement of the case,
而不知其所為使。 but we do not know what it is that makes it be so.
若有真宰， It might seem as if there would be a true Governor concerned in it,
而特不得其眹。 but we do not find any trace (of his presence and acting).
可行已信， That such an One could act so I believe;
而不見其形， but we do not see His form.
有情而無形。He has affections, but He has no form.
百骸、九竅、六藏，Given the body, with its hundred parts, its nine openings, and its six viscera,
賅而存焉， all complete in their places,
吾誰與為親？ which do I love the most?
汝皆說之乎？Do you love them all equally?
其有私焉？or do you love some more than others?
如是皆有，為臣妾乎，Is it not the case that they all perform the part of your servants and waiting women?
其臣妾不足以相治乎。All of them being such, are they not incompetent to rule one another?
其遞相為君臣乎，or do they take it in turns to be now ruler and now servants?
其有真君存焉。There must be a true Ruler (among them)
如求得其情與不得，whether by searching you can find out His character or not,
無益損乎其真。there is neither advantage nor hurt, so far as the truth of His operation is concerned.
一受其成形，When once we have received the bodily form complete,
不亡以待盡。its parts do not fail to perform their functions till the end comes.
與物相刃相靡， In conflict with things or in harmony with them,
其行盡如馳，而莫之能止，they pursue their course to the end, with the speed of a galloping horse which cannot be stopped
不亦悲乎！ - is it not sad?
終身役役而不見其成功，To be constantly toiling all one's lifetime, without seeing the fruit of one's labour,
苶然疲役而不知其所歸，and to be weary and worn out with his labour, without knowing where he is going to
可不哀邪！ - is it not a deplorable case?
人謂之不死，奚益？Men may say, 'But it is not death;' yet of what advantage is this?
其形化， When the body is decomposed,
其心與之然，the mind will be the same along with it
可不謂大哀乎？ - must not the case be pronounced very deplorable?
人之生也，固若是芒乎！Is the life of man indeed enveloped in such darkness?
其我獨芒，Is it I alone to whom it appears so?
而人亦有不芒者乎！And does it not appear to be so to other men?
