五、皇極：v. 'Fifth, of royal perfection.
皇建其有極。The sovereign, having established (in himself) the highest degree and pattern of excellence,
斂時五福， concentrates in his own person the five (sources of) happiness,
用敷錫厥庶民。and proceeds to diffuse them, and give them to the multitudes of the people.
惟時厥庶民于汝極。Then they, on their part, embodying your perfection,
錫汝保極：will give it (back) to you, and secure the preservation of it.
凡厥庶民，Among all the multitudes of the people
無有淫朋， there will be no unlawful confederacies,
人無有比德， and among men (in office) there will be no bad and selfish combinations;
惟皇作極。 let the sovereign establish in (himself) the highest degree and pattern of excellence.
凡厥庶民，Among all the multitudes of the people
有猷有為有守，there will be those who have ability to plan and to act, and who keep themselves (from evil)
汝則念之。 - do you keep such in mind;
不協于極，and there will be those who, not coming up to the highest point of excellence,
不罹于咎， yet do not involve themselves in evil
皇則受之。- let the sovereign receive such.
而康而色， And when a placid satisfaction appears in their countenances,
曰： and they say,
『予攸好德。』 "Our love is fixed on virtue,"
汝則錫之福。 do you then confer favours on them;
時人斯其惟皇之極。 those men will in this way advance to the perfection of the sovereign.
無虐煢獨而畏高明，Do not let him oppress the friendless and childless, nor let him fear the high and distinguished.
人之有能有為， When men (in office) have ability and administrative power,
使羞其行， let them be made still more to cultivate their conduct;
而邦其昌。 and the prosperity of the country will be promoted.
凡厥正人， All (such) right men,
既富方谷，having a competency, will go on in goodness.
汝弗能使有好于而家， If you cannot cause them to have what they love in their families,
時人斯其辜。 they will forthwith proceed to be guilty of crime.
于其無好德， As to those who have not the love of virtue,
汝雖錫之福， although you confer favours (and emoluments) on them,
其作汝用咎。they will (only) involve you in the guilt of employing the evil.
無偏無陂，Without deflection, without unevenness,
遵王之義；Pursue the royal righteousness.
無有作好，Without selfish likings,
遵王之道；Pursue the royal way.
無有作惡，Without selfish dislikings,
尊王之路。Pursue the royal path.
無偏無黨，Avoid deflection, avoid partiality;
王道蕩蕩；Broad and long is the royal way.
無黨無偏，Avoid partiality, avoid deflection;
王道平平；Level and easy is the royal way.
無反無側，Avoid perversity, avoid one-sidedness;
王道正直。Correct and straight is the royal way.
會其有極，(Ever) seek for this perfect excellence,
歸其有極。(Ever) turn to this perfect excellence.
曰：He went on to say,
皇，極之敷言， 'This amplification of the royal perfection contains the unchanging (rule),
是彝是訓， and is the (great) lesson;
于帝其訓，yea, it is the lesson of God.
凡厥庶民， All the multitudes of the people,
極之敷言，是訓是行，instructed in this amplification of the perfect excellence, and carrying it into practice,
以近天子之光。 will thereby approximate to the glory of the Son of Heaven,
曰： and say,
天子作民父母， "The Son of Heaven is the parent of the people,
以為天下王。 and so becomes the sovereign of all under the sky."'
