惟天地萬物父母，'Heaven and earth is the parent of all creatures;
惟人萬物之靈。 and of all creatures man is the most highly endowed.
但聰明，The sincerely intelligent (among men)
作元后， becomes the great sovereign;
元后作民父母。 and the great sovereign is the parent of the people.
今商王受，But now, Shou, the king of Shang,
弗敬上天， does not reverence Heaven above,
降災下民。 and inflicts calamities on the people below.
沈湎冒色， Abandoned to drunkenness and reckless in lust,
敢行暴虐， he has dared to exercise cruel oppression.
罪人以族， He has extended the punishment of offenders to all their relatives.
官人以世， He has put men into offices on the hereditary principle.
惟宮室、台榭、陂池、侈服，He has made it his pursuit to have palaces, towers, pavilions, embankments, ponds, and all other extravagances,
以殘害于爾萬姓。to the most painful injury of you, the myriads of the people.
焚炙忠良， He has burned and roasted the loyal and good.
刳剔孕婦。 He has ripped up pregnant women.
皇天震怒， Great Heaven was moved with indignation,
命我文考，and charged my deceased father Wen
肅將天威， to display its terrors;
大勳未集。 but (he died) before the work was completed.
