(Returning to the source)
天下有始，(The Dao) which originated all under the sky
以為天下母。 is to be considered as the mother of them all.
既得1其母，When the mother is found,
以2知其子， we know what her children should be.
既知其子， When one knows that he is his mother's child,
復守其母， and proceeds to guard (the qualities of) the mother that belong to him,
沒身3不殆。 to the end of his life he will be free from all peril.
塞其兌，Let him keep his mouth closed,
閉其門， and shut up the portals (of his nostrils),
終身不勤。 and all his life he will be exempt from laborious exertion.
開其兌， Let him keep his mouth open,
濟其事， and (spend his breath) in the promotion of his affairs,
終身不救。 and all his life there will be no safety for him.
見小曰明，The perception of what is small is (the secret of clear- sightedness;
守柔曰強。 the guarding of what is soft and tender is (the secret of) strength.
用其光，Who uses well his light,
復歸其明，Reverting to its (source so) bright,
無遺身殃；Will from his body ward all blight,
是為習常。And hides the unchanging from men's sight.
