(Stilling war)
夫佳兵者，Now arms, however beautiful,
不祥之器， are instruments of evil omen,
物或恶之，hateful, it may be said, to all creatures.
故有道者不处。 Therefore they who have the Dao do not like to employ them.
君子居则贵左，The superior man ordinarily considers the left hand the most honourable place,
用兵则贵右。 but in time of war the right hand.
兵者不祥之器， Those sharp weapons are instruments of evil omen,
非君子之器， and not the instruments of the superior man;
不得已而用之， - he uses them only on the compulsion of necessity.
恬淡为上。 Calm and repose are what he prizes;
胜而不美， victory (by force of arms) is to him undesirable.
而美之者，To consider this desirable
是乐杀人。 would be to delight in the slaughter of men;
夫乐杀人者，and he who delights in the slaughter of men
则不可以得志于天下矣。 cannot get his will in the kingdom.
吉事尚左，On occasions of festivity to be on the left hand is the prized position;
凶事尚右。on occasions of mourning, the right hand.
偏将军居左， The second in command of the army has his place on the left;
上将军居右， the general commanding in chief has his on the right;
言以丧礼处之。- his place, that is, is assigned to him as in the rites of mourning.
杀人之衆，He who has killed multitudes of men
以哀悲泣之， should weep for them with the bitterest grief;
战胜以丧礼处之。 and the victor in battle has his place (rightly) according to those rites.
