《詩》云：In the Book of Poetry, it is said,
「瞻彼淇澳， "Look at that winding course of the Qi,
菉竹猗猗。 with the green bamboos so luxuriant!
有斐君子， Here is our elegant and accomplished prince!
如切如磋， As we cut and then file;
如琢如磨。 as we chisel and then grind:
瑟兮僩兮， so has he cultivated himself.
赫兮喧兮。How grave is he and dignified! How majestic and distinguished!
有斐君子，Our elegant and accomplished prince
終不可諠兮！」 never can be forgotten."
「如切如磋」者， That expression-"As we cut and then file,"
道學也； the work of learning.
「如琢如磨」者， "As we chisel and then grind,"
自修也； indicates that of self-culture.
「瑟兮僩兮」者， "How grave is he and dignified!"
恂慄也； indicates the feeling of cautious reverence.
「赫兮喧兮」者， "How commanding and distinguished!
威儀也； indicates an awe-inspiring deportment.
「有斐君子，"Our elegant and accomplished prince
終不可諠兮」者， never can be forgotten,"
道盛德至善，indicates how, when virtue is complete and excellence extreme,
民之不能忘也。 the people cannot forget them.
《詩》云：In the Book of Poetry, it is said,
「於戲前王不忘！」"Ah! the former kings are not forgotten."
君子賢其賢而親其親，Future princes deem worthy what they deemed worthy, and love what they loved.
小人樂其樂而利其利，The common people delight in what delighted them, and are benefited by their beneficial arrangements.
此以沒世不忘也。It is on this account that the former kings, after they have quitted the world, are not forgotten.
