儒家 -> 禮記 -> 中庸 -> 17

子曰：The Master said,
「舜其大孝也與！ "How greatly filial was Shun!
德為聖人， His virtue was that of a sage;
尊為天子， his dignity was the throne;
富有四海之內。 his riches were all within the four seas.
宗廟饗之， He offered his sacrifices in his ancestral temple,
子孫保之。 and his descendants preserved the sacrifices to himself.
故大德必得其位，Therefore having such great virtue, it could not but be that he should obtain the throne,
必得其祿， that he should obtain those riches,
必得其名， that he should obtain his fame,
必得其壽。 that he should attain to his long life.
故天之生物，Thus it is that Heaven, in the production of things,
必因其材而篤焉。is sure to be bountiful to them, according to their qualities.
故栽者培之，Hence the tree that is flourishing, it nourishes,
傾者覆之。while that which is ready to fall, it overthrows.
《詩》曰：In the Book of Poetry, it is said,
『嘉樂君子，'The admirable amiable prince
憲憲令德！ displayed conspicuously his excelling virtue,
宜民宜人，adjusting his people, and adjusting his officers.
受祿于天。Therefore, he received from Heaven his emoluments of dignity.
保佑命之，It protected him, assisted him, decreed him the throne;
自天申之！』sending from Heaven these favors, as it were repeatedly.'
故大德者必受命。We may say therefore that he who is greatly virtuous will be sure to receive the appointment of Heaven.
