凡奸聲感人，Whenever notes that are evil and depraved affect men,
而逆氣應之； a corresponding evil spirit responds to them (from within);
逆氣成象， and when this evil spirit accomplishes its manifestations,
而淫樂興焉。 licentious music is the result.
正聲感人， Whenever notes that are correct affect men,
而順氣應之； a corresponding correct spirit responds to them (from within);
順氣成象， and when this correct spirit accomplishes its manifestations,
而和樂興焉。 harmonious music is the result.
倡和有應， The initiating cause and the result correspond to each other.
回邪曲直，The round and the deflected, the crooked and the straight,
各歸其分； have each its own category;
而萬物之理， and such is the character of all things,
各以其類相動也。 that they affect one another severally according to their class.
是故君子反情以和其志， Hence the superior man returns to the (good) affections (proper to his nature) in order to bring his will into harmony with them,
比類以成其行。 and compares the different qualities (of actions) in order to perfect his conduct.
奸聲亂色，Notes that are evil and depraved, and sights leading to disorder, and licentiousness,
不留聰明； are not allowed to affect his ears or eyes.
淫樂慝禮，Licentious music and corrupted ceremonies
不接心術。 are not admitted into the mind to affect its powers.
惰慢邪辟之氣不設於身體，The spirit of idleness, indifference, depravity, and perversity finds no exhibition in his person.
使耳目鼻口、心知百體皆由順正以行其義。And thus he makes his ears, eyes, nose, and mouth, the apprehensions of his mind, and the movements of all the parts of his body, all follow the course that is correct, and do that which is right.
