| 子夏問於孔子曰： | Zi-xia asked Confucius, saying, |
| 「居父母之仇如之何？」 | 'How should (a son) conduct himself with reference to the man who has killed his father or mother?' |
| 夫子曰： | The Master said, |
| 「寢苫枕干， | 'He should sleep on straw, with his shield for a pillow; |
| 不仕， | he should not take office; |
| 弗與共天下也； | he must be determined not to live with the slayer under the same heaven. |
| 遇諸市朝， | If he meet with him in the market-place or the court, |
| 不反兵而鬥。」 | he should not have to go back for his weapon, but (instantly) fight with him.' |
| 曰：「請問居昆弟之仇如之何？」 | 'Allow me to ask,' said (the other), 'how one should do with reference to the man who has slain his brother?' |
| 曰：「仕弗與共國； | 'He may take office,' was the reply, 'but not in the same state with the slayer; |
