| Thereupon three chiefs were commissioned to care for and consolate the people: (1) Bo Yi delivered the laws and statutes and taught therewith the people. |
| 《·》: | 子曰：「伯夷、叔齊不念舊惡，怨是用希。」 |
| The Master said, "Bo Yi and Shu Qi did not keep the former wickednesses of men in mind, and hence the resentments directed towards them were few." |
| 《·》: | 曰：「伯夷、伊尹何如？」 |
| Chou then asked, 'What do you say of Bo Yi and Yi Yin?' |
| 《·》: | 若狐不偕、務光、伯夷、叔齊、箕子胥餘、紀他、申徒狄，是役人之役，適人之適，而不自適其適者也。 |
| Such men as Hu Bu-jie, Wu Guang, Bo-yi, Shu-Qi, the count of Ji, Xu-yu, Ji Ta, and Shen-tu Di, all did service for other men, and sought to secure for them what they desired, not seeking their own pleasure. |
| 《·》: | 而禹、皋陶、契、后稷、伯夷、夔、龍、倕、益、彭祖自堯時而皆舉用，未有分職。 |
| Now Yu, Gaoyao, Xie, Houji, Boyi, Kui, Long, Chui Yi, and Pengzu were all from the time of Yao promoted to office, but had not separate appointments. |

| All (In the court) answered, 'Is there not Bo-yi?' |
| 《·》: | 故善治者，使跖可信，而況伯夷乎？ |
| Therefore, a good ruler succeeds in making a man like Zhi trustworthy; how much more, then, a man like Bo Yi. |
| 《·》: | 人主之左右，行非伯夷也，求索不得，貨賂不至，則精辯之功息，而毀誣之言起矣。 |
| 《·》: | 貧賤者多矣，而伯夷獨舉。 |
| 《·》: | 當堯之時，舜為司徒，契為司馬，禹為司空，后稷為田疇，夔為樂正，倕為工師，伯夷為秩宗，皋陶為大理，益掌敺禽，堯體力便巧不能為一焉，堯為君而九子為臣，其何故也？ |
