| The Master said, "A sage it is not mine to see." |
| 《·》: | 圣人复起，必从吾言矣。 |
| When a Sage shall again arise, he will certainly follow my words. |
| 《·》: | 故曰：至人无己，神人无功，圣人无名。 |
| Therefore it is said, 'The Perfect man has no (thought of) self; the Spirit-like man, none of merit; the Sagely-minded man, none of fame.' |
| 《·》: | 武丁夜梦得圣人，名曰说。 |
| Wuding dreamed one night that he had found a holy man named Yue. |
| 《·》: | 是故圣人作，为礼以教人。 |
| Therefore, when the sages arose, they framed the rules of propriety in order to teach men. |
| 《》: | 是以圣人处无为之事，行不言之教。 |
| Therefore the sage manages affairs without doing anything, and conveys his instructions without the use of speech. |
| 《·》: | 秩秩大猷、圣人莫之。 |
| Wisely arranged are the great plans; - Sages determined them. |
| 《·》: | 曾子曰：“敢问圣人之德，无以加于孝乎？” |
| The disciple Zeng said, "I venture to ask whether in the virtue of the sages there was not something greater than filial piety." |
| 《·》: | 圣人以顺动，则刑罚清而民服。 |
| The sages show such docile obedience in connexion with their movements, and hence their punishments and penalties are entirely just, and the people acknowledge it by their submission. |
| 《·》: | 若圣人有非而不非。 |
| 《·》: | 圣人执要，四方来效。 |
| 《·》: | 由此观之，万物固以自然，圣人又何事焉？ |
| 《·》: | 其义则始乎为士，终乎为圣人。 |
| 《》: | 晋栾书救郑，与楚师遇于绕角，楚师还，晋师遂侵蔡，楚公子申，公子成，以申息之师救蔡，御诸桑隧，赵同，赵括，欲战，请于武子，武子将许之，知庄子，范文子，韩献子，谏曰，不可，吾来救郑，楚师去我，吾遂至于此，是迁戮也，戮而不已，又怒楚师，战必不克，虽克不令，成师以出，而败楚之二县，何荣之有焉，若不能败，为辱已甚，不如还也，乃遂还，于是军师之欲战者众，或谓栾武子曰，圣人与众同欲，是以济事，子盍从众，子为大政，将酌于民者也，子之佐十一人，其不欲战者，三人而已，欲战者可谓众矣，商书曰，三人占，从二人，众故也，武子曰，善钧从众，夫善，众之主也，三卿为主，可谓众矣，从之，不亦可乎。 |
