| 'I have heard it said: It is not that there is no peaceful abode but that I have no peaceful heart (over others' homelessness). |

| The philosopher Zeng said, "I daily examine myself on three points: whether, in transacting business for others, I may have been not faithful." |

| If your Majesty say, "What is to be done to profit my kingdom?" |
| 《·》: | 夫子立而天下治，而我犹尸之，吾自视缺然，请致天下。 |
| Do you, Master, stand forth (as sovereign), and the kingdom will (at once) be well governed. If I still (continue to) preside over it, I must look on myself as vainly occupying the place - I beg to resign the throne to you. |
| 《·》: | 尧曰：“吾其试哉。” |
| 'Shall I try him?' said Yao. |
| 《·》: | 孔子既得合葬于防，曰：“吾闻之：古也墓而不坟。” |
| When Confucius had succeeded in burying (his mother) in the same grave (with his father) at Fang, he said, 'I have heard that the ancients made graves (only), and raised no mound over them.' |
| 《》: | 吾不知其名，字之曰道，强为之名曰大。 |
| I do not know its name, and I give it the designation of the Dao (the Way or Course). Making an effort (further) to give it a name I call it The Great. |

| 《》: | 师服曰，异哉君之名子也，夫名以制义，义以出礼，礼以体政，政以正民，是以政成而民听，易则生乱，嘉耦曰妃，怨耦曰仇，古之命也，今君命大子曰仇，弟曰成师，始兆乱矣，兄其替乎，惠之二十四年，晋始乱，故封桓叔于曲沃，靖侯之孙栾宾傅之，师服曰，吾闻国家之立也，本大而末小，是以能固，故天子建国，诸侯立家，卿置侧室，大夫有贰宗，士有隶子弟，庶人工商，各有分亲，皆有等衰，是以民服事其上，而下无觊觎，今晋，甸侯也，而建国，本既弱矣，其能久乎，惠之三十年，晋潘父弑昭侯而立桓叔，不克，晋人立孝侯，惠之四十五年，曲沃庄伯伐翼，弑孝侯，翼人立其弟鄂侯，鄂侯生哀侯，哀侯侵陉庭之田，陉庭南鄙，启曲沃伐翼。 |
