| 'I have heard it said: It is not that there is no peaceful abode but that I have no peaceful heart (over others' homelessness). |

| The philosopher Zeng said, "I daily examine myself on three points: whether, in transacting business for others, I may have been not faithful." |

| If your Majesty say, "What is to be done to profit my kingdom?" |
| 《·》: | 夫子立而天下治，而我猶尸之，吾自視缺然，請致天下。 |
| Do you, Master, stand forth (as sovereign), and the kingdom will (at once) be well governed. If I still (continue to) preside over it, I must look on myself as vainly occupying the place - I beg to resign the throne to you. |
| 《·》: | 堯曰：「吾其試哉。」 |
| 'Shall I try him?' said Yao. |
| 《·》: | 三，孔子泫然流涕曰：「吾聞之：古不修墓。」 |
| They told him this thrice without his giving them any answer. He then wept freely, and said, 'I have heard that the ancients did not need to repair their graves.' |
| 《》: | 吾不知其名，字之曰道，強為之名曰大。 |
| I do not know its name, and I give it the designation of the Dao (the Way or Course). Making an effort (further) to give it a name I call it The Great. |

| And still he says, "The people are mine; the (heavenly) appointment is mine," |

| I have heard it said that in poor country districts, much is thought strange, and that in village schools there are many debates. |
| 《·》: | 君召張孟談而問之曰：「吾城郭已治，守備已具，錢粟已足，甲兵有餘，吾奈無箭何？」 |
| 《·》: | 孔子謂顏回曰：「吾服汝也忘，而汝服於我也亦忘。」 |

| 《》: | 師服曰，異哉君之名子也，夫名以制義，義以出禮，禮以體政，政以正民，是以政成而民聽，易則生亂，嘉耦曰妃，怨耦曰仇，古之命也，今君命大子曰仇，弟曰成師，始兆亂矣，兄其替乎，惠之二十四年，晉始亂，故封桓叔于曲沃，靖侯之孫欒賓傅之，師服曰，吾聞國家之立也，本大而末小，是以能固，故天子建國，諸侯立家，卿置側室，大夫有貳宗，士有隸子弟，庶人工商，各有分親，皆有等衰，是以民服事其上，而下無覬覦，今晉，甸侯也，而建國，本既弱矣，其能久乎，惠之三十年，晉潘父弒昭侯而立桓叔，不克，晉人立孝侯，惠之四十五年，曲沃莊伯伐翼，弒孝侯，翼人立其弟鄂侯，鄂侯生哀侯，哀侯侵陘庭之田，陘庭南鄙，啟曲沃伐翼。 |
