| Before long, Qi desired to attack Lu. He remarked to Zi Gong: "Oh, Ci." |
| 《·》: | 子禽問於子貢曰：「夫子至於是邦也，必聞其政，求之與？」 |
| Zi Qin asked Zi Gong, saying, "When our master comes to any country, he does not fail to learn all about its government. Does he ask his information?" |
| 《·》: | 宰我、子貢善為說辭，冉牛、閔子、顏淵善言德行。 |
| On this Chou observed, 'Zai Wo and Zi Gong were skilful in speaking. Ran Niu, the disciple Min, and Yan Yuan, while their words were good, were distinguished for their virtuous conduct.' |
| 《·》: | 孔子聞之，使子貢往侍事焉。 |
| Confucius heard of the event, and sent Zi-gong to go and see if he could render any assistance. |
| 《·》: | 遂命子貢為之主，曰：「為爾哭也來者，拜之。」 |
| Accordingly he ordered Zi-gong to act as presiding mourner on the occasion, saying to him, 'Bow to those who come because you have a wailing in your house.' |
| 《》: | 仲尼，聖人也，或者劣諸子貢，子貢辭而精之，然後廓如也。 |
| Confucius was a sage, but some said that he was inferior to Zigong. Zigong's own words cleared up the issue, so that afterwards, such an idea was dropped. |

| 《·》: | 蘧伯玉為相，子貢往觀之，曰：「何以治國？」 |
| 《·》: | 子貢見師乙而問焉，曰：「賜聞聲歌各有宜也，如賜者宜何歌也？」 |
| 《·》: | 子貢問於孔子曰：「賜倦於學矣，願息事君。」 |
| 《》: | 十五年，春，邾隱公來朝，子貢觀焉，邾子執玉高，其容仰，公受玉卑，其容俯，子貢曰，以禮觀之，二君者皆有死亡焉，夫禮，死生存亡之體也，將左右周旋，進退俯仰，於是乎取之，朝祀喪戎，於是乎觀之，今正月相朝，而皆不度，心巳亡矣，嘉事不體，何以能久，高仰，驕也，卑俯，替也，驕近亂，替近疾，君為主，其先亡乎。 |
