When good men stop 1,000 li off, calumniators, flatterers, and sycophants will make their appearance.
墨子·親士》:臣下重其爵位而不言,近臣則喑,遠臣則唫,怨結於民心,諂在側,善議障塞,則國危矣。
If (to the contrary) the subordinates should value their positions and keep silence, the ministers near at hand would be speechless and those far away could only sigh, and the people would become bitter. When the ruler is surrounded with praises and flatteries and insulated against good counsels, then the country is in danger.
莊子·天地》:孝子不其親,忠臣不諂其君,臣子之盛也。
The filial son who does not flatter his father, and the loyal minister who does not fawn on his ruler, are the highest examples of a minister and a son.
