| When the Master was in Qi, he heard the Shao, and for three months did not know the taste of flesh. |

| "Satiated us with his goodness," that is, satiated us with benevolence and righteousness, and he who is so satiated, consequently, does not wish for the fat meat and fine millet of men. |
| 《·》: | 夫悲哀在中，故形變於外也，痛疾在心，故口不甘味，身不安美也。 |
| The internal grief and sorrow produced a change in his outward appearance; and with the severe pain in his heart, his mouth could not relish any savoury food, nor his body find ease in anything pleasant. |
| 《》: | 棄常珍而嗜乎異饌者，惡睹其識味也？ |
| As for one who rejects the regular delicacies and is fond of strange dishes, how do you know that he can recognize tastes? |
| 《·》: | 五穀盡收，則五味盡御於主，不盡收則不盡御。 |
| When all the five grains are gathered, all the five tastes will be offered the ruler; when not all gathered, the five tastes will not be all offered. |

| Men eat animals that have been fed on grain and grass; deer feed on the thick-set grass; centipedes enjoy small snakes; owls and crows delight in mice; but does any one of the four know the right taste? |

| A-Heng wanted to meet Tang, but had no opportunity of doing so; he therefore became cook to the prince of Xin, and while bringing Tang dishes to taste urged him to perfect himself in the way of the ancient kings. |
